John Kelin's Jazz Photographs
Kenn Cox
The late Kenn Cox once said, "I'm proud of Detroit's rich music heritage, and grateful to have experienced it."
Cox was a pianist and composer; a Detroit native who, with his Contemporary Jazz Quintet, recorded a couple of albums for Blue Note in the mid-1960s. (The CJQ also featured Charles Moore, Leon Henderson, Ron Brooks, and Danny Spencer.)
Over the years, Kenn also performed and recorded with the likes of Rahsaan Roland Kirk, Philly Joe Jones, and Wes Montgomery.
The top photo was taken during a performance with Christopher Pitts EMX in Hart Plaza, downtown Motown. The bottom photo was with Cox's Guerilla Jam Band. (I can't remember the venue.)
Kenn Cox died in December, 2008.
