the US Peace Symbol Flag
It's time to dust off this 60's relic for contemporary use: the US flag with a white peace symbol replacing the stars. The peace symbol actually started out as Bertrand Russell's invention for the nuclear disarmament movement in the UK, combining the flag semaphore codes for "N" (inverted "V") and "D" (vertical bar). But its meaning grew to encompass the ideas of the peace movement in general, and it became a familiar icon for the 60's hippie counter-culture. Incorporating this symbol into the US flag was a natural. The US flag had already been seized as an icon, and used in posters, clothing, and ... remember Peter Fonda's motorcycle in "Easy Rider"? Hippies have always been proud, patriotic Americans ... we simply have our own ideas about where our country ought to go ... Our nation-wide jingo-fest has made me envious ... I wanted to fly my own flag along with everybody else. So I drafted these images ... and in the spirit of the 1960's, I want to share them: |
