Some seamless tiles

Seamless tiles are a great low-impact way to add graphics to windows or web page backgrounds. File sizes are generally much smaller than full-screen bitmaps, and tiling works with any screen or window size.

Here are a few of my favorites, all based on folk and ethnic textile designs. Since textiles use repeating patterns, they are a natural resource for screen tiles.

Finally, here are a couple of links for some fantastic tiles:

  • The Bartlett Home for Wayward Intellectuals (offline) - several tiles based on another natural for tiling patterns, actual wallpaper. These are all sampled from wallpaper by William Morris, the Victorian designer and social visionary.

  • Bradley W. Schenck's Long Playing Computer Graphics - some Celtic and Arts-and-Crafts patterns.
