I grew up in
Stratford,
CT, in the Lordship section of town. Grew up in a simple cape house with mom, dad & twin sisters. Yes, growing up with twins was a living hell. Two against one all the time... Boy did they get me into trouble. But that's in the past. :-) My elementary school is now a housing tract. My junior high is now a school for gifted students (that would have been nice). My HS,
Stratford High School
is still alive and kicking (although it almost wasn't). the town finally ponied up some money to turn it from a dump into a pretty nice place. I was pretty much the your standard geek at school, but a nice guy nonetheless. The only thing people were pissed at me for is doing well without trying very hard. :) At HS is where I ran into my first computer, a lowly Apple ][. 16 K of memory. No disk drive - we couldn't afford that. Programs were saved on a cassette tape through an audio feed. Kids today have it easy. :)
In any case, while not quite a small town, it was a small town. The old 'nothing to do until you can get a car' kind of town. Although that might have fed my love of cycling. In any case, I couldn't wait to leave. But the past is never forgotten. Now that I'm all growed up, I sponsor a small scholarship back at SHS. So life rolls on and I went to the semi city of Boston where I went to Northeastern University's College of Computer Science. I'd love to say I picked NU after some kind of extensive search, but no. I kind of fell into it. Not many places had computer degrees at that time. Plus, NU's co-op program was going to be a keen way to help pay for school. But I got through it. semester overloads, 3 jobs to help pay, 2 majors, and a whole lot of strange electives, and I made it. NU CCS '87, Cum Laude, 3.9 in my major, BS Computer Science, BS Mathematics, and electives in architecture, medieval literature, Gershwin, photography, electronic music and a few others i've since forgotten. At NU is where I happened on my current place of employment, Draper Laboratory. I started there as a co-op from NU, and I've been there ever since. (8/83, you do the math). We do some really kewl work there, and that's what keeps me there. OK, plus a ton of benefits, some great co-workers, and it's walking distance from home. Which brings us to the present. Anything else? |
