A picture of Martin’s Fork
Cabin. Cost is 20$ for the
group. First to pay me stays
inside, the rest are on the floor. Confirmations are: Ab, Elwood, Hitler,
Buff, Martin, Wayne, Wendi (they will prob tent it) You stay inside, you pay.

Highlanders pose
by Eagle Creek at Campsite 90 in the GSMNP. From left, Wayne, AB, Buff, Martin, Danno, Vic and Todd Shr.

The story begins: 11/28/03
Buff , Ab and Martin begin the 5.6 mile hike from
Fontana to #90. Our car breaks
down. Okay, it isn’t our car, it is
part of the scenery on our wonderful flat hike out to the campsite. Weather was cold mist, temp in the 30s. Why, you may ask,
“Because we Like it!”

Darkness falls and the weather moves in.

Martin awakes to some
snow. Ab snores contently. We have weathered 19degree temps and
35mph winds. Everest my ASS, we are
ALIVE. You will notice the Absence
of Wayne, who chose to wait the weather out at his house, saying, “it’s
cold and I am used to the Keys, man, I’ll see you tomorrow”

The confluence of Eagle Creek and Fontana Lake. A good place for a boat to land, we
thought, should any lazy asses be so inclined.

Then Wayne Shows Up,
rested and stylish but cold.
day2:

This is where the story gets good. Guess who comes to dinner
with a thanksgiving ham on
a
boat?
That’s right.
It’s Danno, Todd and vic, who, despite fears of weather, wives and
wine, took a damned map and orienteered their way to the campsite. Pretty impressive when you consider that
it was hard to find and they still had to walk a quarter mile with the ham
and all. We appreciated the gallon
of spirits and company. A roaring
fire was enjoyed and Highlander
Council was convened.

Missing Highlanders were noted, excuses scribed and
decisions made. All I can disclose
is that each of the underbitches must check with their sponsors for
permission to attend further events, which are made in secret. We will be parking at Harrells house,
though, because we know our cars will be safe there.(or Ethel’s, where UL
can polish)

Martin and Ab consider skiing before deciding to work on
their form in the tent later.

A bridge built for the new trail over to Hazel Creek,
home of Horace Kephart, Highlander namesake. The new trail is 4.5 miles to Hazel creek from our campsite.,
replacing the old 10 mile trail.
This bridge was built in 1991 and left unpainted to allow rust to
lend authenticity.

Highlanders
begin hike out, minus packs, which were ferried out by Danno and crew ON THE
BOAT! Sure makes 6 miles seem easy!
Allow
the image above to guide your decisions, lowlanders. When you come to one of life’s bridges and are given an
opportunity, cross that bitch and look back only to wave. Your wife and kids and turkey will be there
when you return and your soul will be thankful-buff.
