Milchester, at the confluence of the Miltern and Haver rivers, is a town of several thousand people. It lies at the southeastern corner of the Barony of Allardsby, but it is not the Baron's property: Milchester is a "Good Town," a town with a charter that makes it legally independent of any lord below the King. The Aldermen who rule the city act in effect as a corporate feudal lord, in much the same way as a modern corporation is legally a person. Milchester's independence makes it prosperous, but that independence is sometimes precarious. The town and its surrounding lands are bordered by no less than four different feudal lords: the Baron of Allardsby, the Baron of Glasweddin, the Earl of Kincowan, and the Duke of Corham himself. As a result, a complex series of treaties and alliances has evolved, and Milchester is a town with a rich and involved political life. |
