It was this wave combined with the core NSC guys remaining, that began the ascent into the late 80's which included our joining the Peninsula League, steadily climbing into 1st division, and our first promotion match to get into Majors. The last year we wore the original Tiger Yellow & Black. Werner was living in Holland for a 5 year period, working on his game.

The above group worked to establish a defense first philosophy, playing a 4-4-2, and brilliant goalkeeping.

I can't recall, for instance, the years that the various goalies spent time in the nets, or whether Hatch joined us in wave #2 from Poly or Wave #3 (below), or in-between. The 89/90 phase did see the return of Werner

Note: the addition of these players meant the end for almost all the NSC folks and early Tigers. I think we hung onto the van den Bergs, Werner and Doug!. The 2nd wave pushed us to the pinnacle of competition in this area, Peninsula League Major Division. This was post NASL, pre MSL, and the top flight division consisted of teams like the Oaks, Sporting, PAC, Benfica, PARS, SJ Lions. ** Not everyone in the following table was on the roster at the SAME year, but for a 4-5 year period we employed various configurations of the following folks:

It's not clear to me how and when the wave #3 players were added. The facts are hazy. What is clear is that we split with our SJS core, as Stu, Alan, Pablo, Joe Gongale began families. After the split we sold the Tigers slot in Majors for #1500.00 and had a party. Mike Williams moved to the East Coast, Alex took a job at CalPoly coaching the womens team, Barry moved to SoCal, Larry retired from competitive play, Shives started playing hockey and raisin his kids. So wiith all that change, we needed some fresh legs, ergo, the Poly Wave #3. Peninsula made us start out in like 2nd division. We whiiped most everyone, winning 2nd, then 1st (by beating the Gobbans twice), then battled head to head with a few teams to take the Premier Division, alas achieving promotion back in Majors in 1998.

The team entered 2000 as the oldest team still competing in the Peninsula Open class. The 1999 season was a good one, we won the league Cup for the 4th time, but the last two years were taking its toll on the old bodies. Things, such as turning out enough healthy bodies are wearing on us. We lose Stribling to a knee, we lose Fermin to a knee, Korngiebel breaks his arm, Peck begins traveling, Bobby moves to Sebastapool, Donne moves back to So Cal. Benoit moves back to France (HP sent him back), Walker disappears, Brian moves to SanFran. Suddenly we find ourselves in need of a makeover - yet again
