MID-ATLANTIC REGION INDEPENDENT SOLIDWORKS USERS GROUP MEETING
June 25, 2003

The meeting started with pizza and soda. President Mark Semmel opened the meeting with 15 people present.

  1. Business
    • SolidWorks World will be divided into regional conferences next year. Although there has been no official announcement, it is likely there will be a conference in Boston during January and one in Chicago during March.
    • Of the volunteer requests from last month, only the website has made any progress. The other groups were Presentation and Prizes (only 1 volunteer), Newsletter (4 volunteers), and Food and Fun (no volunteers).
    • Secretary Toby Schnaars is moving to Arizona so his position is open. There were no volunteers to replace him at this time.
    • The next meeting will be on Wednesday, September 17, 2003.
    • Members were interested in seeing a demo of rapid prototyping at a future meeting. Prism Engineering has a new piece of equipment which can make models of ABS plastic quickly and cheaply.
    • The group is also looking for members to host meetings at their worksites and provide a tour/demo of their product and facilities.
    • Jose Umana showed the new MARISUG website in two different layouts for members to express their preference. The new website is reached through a link to the old one. Jose is looking for SolidWorks models as jpeg files to use as rollover images on the site.
  2. SolidWorks 2003 Animation Demonstration by Jeff Holiday
    • Jeff used animation to show the features of a parrot gym, e.g. the tray sliding in and out and accessories added and removed.
    • The second animation demo was the consumer assembly instructions for a bag-style flytrap, complete with buzzing fly.
  3. Members
    • Member introductions
    • Door prizes, including a CadMan USB 3D motion controller, donated by SolidWorks and 3Dconnexion were given out.
  4. Macros and Customization Presentation by Eric Franco
    • Copying customized settings from one machine to another requires different methods for the different types of customization.
    • System Options are copied to another machine with the Copy Options Wizard (Start>Programs>SolidWorks>SW Tools> Copy Options).
    • Shortcuts that are assigned to a keystroke(s) are saved in the username.cus file that can be copied. These can be moved from release to release.
    • Toolbar settings require the Windows command REGEDIT to export and save to another machine.
    • Macros are supported by 2 types of files: “.swb” Basic Source files in ASCII which edit in text editor and “.swp” VBA files in binary edited through the Macro Toolbar in SW.
    • Macros can be run from:
      • Macro PLAY button on the Macro Toolbar
      • Custom macro icon (drag button to toolbar; choose image in Programs>SW>Data>User macro icons)
      • Hot key (create in Toolbar Customization)
      • Macro feature (must be done through API)
      • To get a list of macro websites e-mail a request to efranco@solidinnovations.com.
  5. Miscellaneous Information
    • When using Photoworks 2, legacy data must be translated to this version or it will be lost.
    • To enhance graphics performance from video card to CPU with certain graphics cards check Tools>Options>System Options>Use Software OpenGL with no files open.
    • Nvidia and SW are working closer together on graphics enhancement.
    • Prism is holding a “Beta Night” seminar on SW 2004.
