The Great Sand Dunes lie at the feet of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, at the edge of the San Luis Valley in Colorado. The prevailing winds and the creeks flowing down from the mountains have deposited over thirty square miles of sand here. The dunes are North America’s tallest; some are 750 feet high.
