Mystery Science Theater 3000 was a show that aired on Comedy Central then on the Sci-Fi channel about a guy trapped in an orbiting space craft, which was called the Satellite of Love. He was put there by a mad scientist that had dreams of ruling the world and thought a great way to do it was to show people enough bad movies to break their will. However, he needed to know how much was enough and that made him send bad movie after bad movie to the SOL (Satellite of Love) until the test subject reached the breaking point. Pictured to the right is the crew: Crow T Robot, Gypsy, Mike Nelson, and Tom Servo.

The test subject, Joel and later on in the series Mike, had little robots made that could talk and keep him company in the movie theater as well as help him not go crazy or crack under the pressure.

The MST3K episodes were mostly made up of Mike and the Bots sitting in an empty movie theater watching a bad movie and making comments throughout the film. There were also little skits here and there complete with spoofs, songs, daily life on the SOL, visitors on the hex-view screen and the occasional escape attempt.

In 1996 Mystery Science Theater went to the big screen with Mystery Science Theater 3000: The Movie in which they view the sci-fi classic This Island Earth.
