About Quanta
Quanta plays in the Tallahassee area, home of Florida state
government and FSU football, not to mention Florida State University
and the High Magnetic Field Lab. To get away from the pressures
of big science, these guys like to jam on tunes from various musical
eras, with the exception of glam rock. To escape the ASCAP
police, they even write a few of their own songs.
They've individually been playing music for as long as they can
remember in countless bands from Ann Arbor Michigan and Austin,
Texas, to Washington D. C. and Erie,
Pennsylvania. We won't list these units here since
they have mostly faded from memory.
Now they are together in a two man group. Even though they
have to manage several instruments in the course of a single
song, they like the flexibility of a small unit. And they
don't have to put up with band members too wasted to play.
People often ask the band why they are called Quanta. The truth
is pretty mundane. They wrote a list of 50 band names on a piece
of paper and crossed out the ones that were not embarrassingly
bad. They were left with Quanta. But it did
fit. A quantum is a small unit of energy. And they are a
small unit, definitely with some energy.
For reasons they have forgotten they continue to pursue that distant
goal of hitting that perfect note, finding that perfect lick on
the instrument.
Occasionally they succeed, but often they forget it the next day.
Nevertheless each time they play they get epsilon better, where epsilon
is a small but significant number much bigger than Planck's
constant. And audiences agree, these guys are good and they are
different.

They like to play some old standards and favorites. They
strictly stay away from Madonna, Lady Gaga, and Justin Bieber,
not because they don't like them, but because they don't do a
very good job of playing their stuff. More to their taste
is T-bone Walker, Bob Dylan, Thelonious Monk, or
Dizzy Gillespie. Occasionally something by that great folk
composer, anon. Whatever they play it comes out sounding like
Quanta.
They are big favorite at the Tallahassee Downtown Market and before the
recession and oil spill guests at the Gibson Inn in Apalachicola,
Florida regularly enjoyed their playing on the front porch into the
Gulf sunset.
They love to play and they will definitely play for food... gourmet
food. To keep track of their elusive movements,
please get on the mailing list.
