Chicago Area Flooding September 2008

It rained 8" in two days - Official O'Hare airport data:
Friday - 0.4"
Saturday - 6.64"
Sunday - 1.44"
Some areas registered 10" or more.

Here's what the West Branch of the DuPage looked like mid-day Sunday at Williams Road. The water is over a foot deep on the bridge deck.

At O'Hare airport, the Arrivals level was curb-deep - that's 4"-6" deep. The FAA actually closed the airport for over an hour during the worst of the Saturday rain.

The only road into and out of the main terminal area was flooded for several hours. This is what the outbound side looked like.

The right lane was barely passable. The road slopes downward to the left so the other lanes were too deep. The far left lane was over two feet deep.

Traffic was allowed to leave very slowly, single file, until the terminal emptied out.

The inbound side was flooded as well and no one was allowed in for several hours.

Terminal 1, Concourse C had its share of water.

Good thing the planes have high ground clearance. The tires generate a significant wake.

Here's a novel way to deal with flood waters.
