Fox River north of St. Charles, IL

Aug 2008

A new friend and I paddled the Fox between the S. Elgin and St. Charles dams. We put in about 6 mi. above St. Charles, about 2.5 mi below S. Elgin. It was the best spot for the water level as it got too shallow to paddle just upstream but was fine downstream.

I took my almost new Kodiak and Dan brought his 2 week old Citibot. The weather was perfect and we had the river almost to ourselves until around 2 PM when the power boat crazies began to appear.

I loaned Dan my SRS adjustable paddle so he could experiment wtih paddle length to find his optimum. I'm using the Folbot paddle that came with his Citibot. It's 25cm too long for me in the Kodiak but it worked for leisurely paddling.

That stretch of the Fox isn't the most scenic but there are some nice sections of wooded banks. Wildlife is abundant if you count ducks and Canadian geese. And, despite the density of development and the power boats, we saw a great blue heron and a white egret. Pretty cool. Sadly, no pictures of same - too far away.

If you like fishing, it looks like it's a good place. We saw big fish jumping out of the water all day. Several were nice and fat and well over a foot long. They were jumping completely clear of the water and landing with a big splash. Don't know if they'd be OK to eat, but it looks like they'd be fun to catch.

I got to paddle Dan's Citibot for a while. It's a great boat - highly maneuverable, a perfect creek boat. It weighs only 25 lbs. so you can pick it up with one hand and walk away with it. Makes portage very easy. In DuPage county, all the good rivers to paddle have several dams which can be discouraging. No longer, if you have a Citibot.
