I'm not a sports fan. I watch a little of the Olympics, but that's it. Very few sports hold my interest for more than a few minutes and the Big Four interest me the least. The excesses of the spoiled, arrogant sports stars of football, baseball and basketball leave me completely cynical. I like good skating. Hockey players are fantastic skaters. If hockey players would just play hockey and quit beating up on each other, maybe I'd watch some.I contend that if professional sports were to magically disappear from the earth, our culture would be unaffected. There would be no loss. A few people, an infinitesimal percentage of the economy, would lose some part time jobs, but the overall effect would be like dropping a grain of sand in the ocean.
Yes, sports can be a legitimate means of entertainment, but our culture and economics have ruined them. It's all money and fame. When one football star makes more money than all the teachers in a school system combined, there's something wrong with our culture's values. Sports in proper proportion are OK, but the way we do it is not.
