The Lady Vanishes into Thin Air
A cloth is laid over an undraped table, and a young lady lies down upon it. The front and back ends of the cloth are then raised clear of the stage; the outline of the girl's body can still be seen through the cloth. A shot is fired, and the cloth collapses and drops to the stage floor. The girl has completely disappeared in mid-air.
The Secret:
The front is raised first, and then the back. Apparently the girl is still within the cloth. Actually, she slid into the trap door as the front was raised. The lazy-tong arrangement in the cloth makes the audience believe that the girl is still concealed within. This tong collapses when the cloth falls.
