Living or Dead
The magician hands out eight or nine business cards, and requests the spectators to write the names of living people on the backs. One spectator is to write the name of a dead person on the back of his card. All are to be sure the magician does not know any of the people. The cards are all dropped in a hat and mixed up. Yet, when the magician pulls them out and read the names, he can tell which are the living and which is the name of the dead person.
The Secret:
The secret here lies in the pencils that the magician hands out with the cards. The pencils all contain a soft lead, such as a number 2 pencil. The pencil given to the special spectator who will write the name of a dead person, contains a hard lead, such as a number 3 pencil.
The magician can tell which card contains the name of the dead person, because it will be a lighter color.
