Below is a list of the content that will be covered in each grade level

September

• Composing numbers and comparing numbers up to 10,000

•Using place value concepts to determine 10, 100, 1000 more or less than a given number

•Addition of multi-digit numbers

• Start rocket ship program-review any strategies-each child will be tested to determine the correct letter to start on

October

•Addition with regrouping out to the 10,000 place

•Addition Word Problems-solving and creating problems

•Review of subtraction concepts

• Rocket ships work is done 3-4 days a week-students will vary as to what level they are on. Our goal is to have all students through addition and subtraction by March.

November

• Multi-digit subtraction with and without regrouping- Carrying across two places tends to be a very difficult concept. All students will start with place value blocks and move to paper and pencil methods once they can verbalize what is happening.

•Addition and Subtraction word problems.- A mixture of both addition and subtraction problems, where students will have to identify which operation is being used. Students will have to draw pictures and write math equations for the given story. Students will also create their own problems.

• Rocket ships work is done 3-4 days a week-students will vary as to what level they are on. Our goal is to have all students through addition and subtraction by March.

December & January

• Addition and Subtraction with variables and symbols- An Algebraic Approach

•Functions/Patterns- Can you guess my rule? Can you create a function machine?

•Rounding using the number line

•Estimating sums and differences

•Fractional parts of a whole. Emphasis will be on equal "pieces".

• Rocket ships work is done 3-4 days a week

February

•Money -Students should feel comfortable with:

  1. values and names of all types of coins.
  2. making exchanges with money
  3. calculating sums of money

•Customary Units of Linear Measurement
(both customary and metric)
-Why do we need standard units?
-What is the difference between the customary and metric system?

•Students create a benchmark for the inch, foot, yard, mile to give the students a visual to always have

•Student accurately measure an object to the nearest half and quarter inch and half cm.

•Student estimate using the benchmarks

•Explore the concept of perimeter

• Rocket ships work is done 3-4 days a week

April

• Time-

• Geometry-
Analyze characteristics and properties of two and three dimensional geometric shapes

• Multiplication Concepts

• Rocket ships work is done 3-4 days a week

May

• Division Concepts:

• Multiplication of 2-digit by 1-digit only if time allows

• Rocket ships work is done 3-4 days a week (goal is for all students to be at least mid-way through subtration rocket)
