Letter to Enli, Nassur Barakesh-Tarquin
Hasmar [19] MalePlayer-character
Enli [17] Male
Enli was sickly since birth, and Hasmar protected him from harm when they were children. They are still quite close (or as close as current geographical circumstances permit). It is a tossup which of his first two sons caused Umur Tarquin more frustration: Hasmar, gifted in strength but not in intellectual ability, who yet insisted upon becoming a wizard -- or Enli, sunken-chested and frail, who insisted on studying the art of swordplay. No brighter than Hasmar, Enli has put what attributes he does have to good use as a swordsman: he is very, very coordinated (very high PP), strives to emulate his older brother's ability to study hard, and he is very strong-willed. When Hasmar, at age 18, was challenged to a duel by an arrogant lesser noble, Enli insisted on "taking" the duel for him on the grounds that Hasmar is no warrior and finished the man quite handily. (This was quite a revelation for Hasmar, who had until that point still thought of Enli as sickly and needing protection. If there's any negative dynamic between the two of them, it is that Enli still feels the need to prove to Hasmar that he's now a tough guy, and Hasmar still has instinctive doubts about that.) Serious to the point of stone-facedness at official functions -- a skill acquired by having to hide illnesses in public when younger -- Enli is known among his friends for a broad sense of humor and a fondness for practical jokes, sometimes quite crude ones. Despite his philosophy that Tarquin children should find something useful to do with themselves, the Umur (even less prepared than Hasmar to accept that Enli can now care for himself) is protective of Enli and has largely kept him within the household. Both Hasmar and Enli are annoyed by this.
Rebekka [16] Female
One of the beauties of the age, at least by human standards, Rebekka is all too aware of this fact. Being brought up in an otherwise all-male household has not helped any; she is as spoiled as a Tarquin can get. Hasmar and Enli can't stand her (this is not serious hatred, but sibling rivalry; the Umur spoils her), and tend to underestimate her as only being fit to stand around, look pretty, and be arrogant. In point of fact, she is smarter than either of them (close, sad to say, to being as smart as both of them combined; say IQ 17 or 18), willful, and has every intention of besting her oldest brother at magic. If she doesn't waste all her time riding the family horses, harassing the servants, and making the younger male noble set (those who have contact with her) crazy, she certainly has the talent to get quite far. The Umur is probably quite aware of his failings here, but may be powerless to act otherwise when faced with (1) his only daughter, who (2) reminds him tremendously of his dead wife, her mother. If he's smart, he'll send her away for tutoring to someone less inclined to cater to her whims. Soon.
Enkidda [14] Male
Enkidda, at age 14, is showing signs that he may become even larger than Hasmar. His interests at present include riding, hunting, and more riding. If asked what he wants to do as an adult, he says that he wants to be a Qurub. Or maybe an Eastern Ranger, because he's heard they get to hunt dragons. He doesn't come off as particularly intelligent -his talents are largely physical-but that could be a lack of interest as much as anything else. He is, however, rather good at what he does do; for a 14-year-old he's startlingly good at riding and archery, and competent with a sword. The Umur is probably pretty pleased with Enkidda, though the child does not yet understand the meaning of subtlety. Could make a great Bel-Qurub some day, if he doesn't defect to the Rangers. (Then again, sending him to the Rangers to be trained could be a good bonding thing with that group.)
Shamesh [10] Male
At this age, who knows? Major interest of the moment is the Navy and the ocean, but that is subject to change with little notice. A fairly big kid.
Kesmur [8] Male
