The Twelve Great Houses In the time before the Rule of Law, there was only war in the domain of Man. Like the Elves and the Dwarves before them, the rulers of the city-states of the West and other lords great and petty, struggled in their overweening pride to increase their dominion. Mankind had learned its lessons well, with slaughter and bloodshed the order of the day. But the gods took pity on the plight of humanity, and so it came to pass that Shamash the Sun descended to earth with the Tablets of Destiny.
The Gods had chosen Gamesh, who himself was half divine to receive this gift. He was to rule mankind in accord with the Laws inscribed upon the Tablets, be granted complete Dominion over Mankind, and the all lands they inhabited. So the first God-King drove forth his chariot unto the land and his righteous armies marched to War. With fire and sword and the favor of the Gods, city-state after city state fell in burning ruins. Conquest was His by divine right. His enemies quaked with fear and soiled their garments wailing, "Woe unto us whom Gamesh names as foes."
But those who were wise saw the Righteousness of His cause and were respectful of the wishes of the Gods. Twelve great Kings, the legendary might of their armies behind them joined their forces to the first God-King's and knelt before his throne. They supplicated before him begging for his mercy. Pressing their noble faces to the dirt of the road they offered their lands and their allegiance to him in return for his mercy.
Gamesh bid them rise and honored them with gifts of gold, still damp with the blood of foes from which it had come. Congratulating the Lords on their wisdom, he swore to them that in return for their loyalty, they would rule lands in his stead. They and their sons would always have his ear. Further Gamesh swore unto them that evermore there would be but twelve noble houses in the Rule of Man. Other Lords who had waited too long would not be shown to his presence, but instead go to their deaths in the wastes.
Ashakku
Umur Ashakku is a tall thin, almost hawkish woman, who wears her head shaved bald after the timelost tradition of Ashakku. Not considered good looking by Western standards, she emphasizes this by ignoring all the dictates of fashion and fine dress. She is an enigmatic, quiet woman with a will of iron. Her ire once earned is unending and legendary in its fierceness. She, as her ancestors, have done for millennia, carries the Runestaff "Hand of Fate".Trade

- Those of House Ashakku have historically declined to join the League of Magi
Eresh
Eresh is a huge blackbearded man, who wears his massive hair in oiled ringlets, now shot with grey. Old-fashioned robes of green and gold, and a headpiece after the fashion of kings of old complete the picture. Once massively muscled he has of late gone to fat, yet a great strength still lies hidden beneath his aging exterior. Boisterous and rude by western standards he is a loud and boastful man.Trade

- Therefore it opposes any other military actions.
- Some rivalry with Sethlans since Erech began attempting to grow grapes for fine wines.
- Currently gets along with all the other houses.
Wealth
- Not particularily well off and dependent on the harvest.
- Otherwise stable and steady.
Historical Notes
- Claims to be an older lineage than Tarquin and claims that the city state of Uruk is older than Ashur.
- Scholars, conveniently located at the University of Ashur, scoff at these claims.
Lugalbanda
This Lord of the hill dwellers in the eastern reaches of the Empire, is short, squat and highly muscled like most of his people. His hair is worn in a huge braid down his back and he wears a full black beard wired into customary form. His hands are thick and callused from strict daily training regimens, in the ancient form of martial arts known to the hill people as the "Way of the Diamond Blade". He wears ceremonial armor of plated leather over the pleated skirt that is the fashion in the hills. He carries two wickedly curved swords strapped to his back and is known to be expert at their use. Despite his intimidating visage and sloped brows, he has a keen mind and a razor sharp perception of people's motives.Trade

- Of late they have supplemented this with Eastern trade
Landholdings
- A great amount of elevated land in the middle and hilly eastern reaches of the Empire
Politics
- traditional nasty rival of Lugalzaggesi based on millenia old border disputes, still in court.
- Otherwise seems to get along as friendly rivals with the other warrior households.
- Has been known to openly mock Umur Sulgi ("ha..ha..! My 3 year old son's birthday parties will soon be larger and more fabulously decadent than renowned Sulgi! Perhaps we could loan you his clowns for your next extravaganza, to pad your entertainment budget! ...snicker...)
- Desires war with the Wolfen.
- Allied with Tarquin
Wealth
- Not a lot of liquid capital available.
- Has spent much maintaining a military force involved with northern border skirmishes.
- Has been borrowing from Shurrupak against hoped for gains in a war.
Historical Notes
- The pre-empire founder, Lugalbanda, was a warlord of immense might and exceeding wealth.
- Scholars and treasure hunters speak of his legendary tomb with awe. "Maps" of "ancient provenance" denoting the tomb's true location are sold by starving beggars to credulous easterners every day.
- This house has maintained the warrior traditions of its forbears and has its own martial arts lineage that is taught to none outside the bloodline.
- These "hill-dwellers" are proud of their rural origins and maintain many traditions strange to civic minded westerners.
Lugalzaggesi
Lugalzaggesi is a tall slender energetic man of pleasant mien. He dresses is very conservative finery and in good taste. He wears no weapons, studies no magic, he is bureaucrat and administrator. However, a talented and successful one. He generally travels with several aids, one who constantly takes notes on the proceedings of meetings, one who administrates an immense volume of traveling information, and a very competent lawyer.Trade

Historical Notes
- Maintains the majority of the infantry of the Western Armies.
- The family is devoted to the worship of Ninhursag and maintains a shrine on a mountain said to be her home.
Ninazu
Umur Ninazu is an older man whose eyes have failed him. Blind in vision, he none the less is able to deftly maintain the details of one of the largest networks of working individuals ever created. He is mentally present at all times and listens with an ear keen for detail. Most importantly he is a nearly infallible judge of human nature and the finest contract negotiator alive. He wears silken finery that has become a bit well-worn in his older years and is generally 20 years out of date. In his youth he was considered quite the ladies man and still is said to keep several mistresses.Trade
- Heavily invested in the trade organizations and skilled worker enclaves of the major cities.
- A cooperative system has developed where Ninazu uses its influence for their benefit and Ninazu gets a percentage of all business.
- Currently making a fortune on shipbuilding for the empire.
Landholdings
- Runs the shipyards for the empire
- Great influence in the city-states of *****, ****, *****, and ****.

- Ongoing feud with Shamshi-Adad over the sponsorship of the Dwarves of the Iron Hills.

- It has maintained its relations with workers for a very long time even by western standards.
- It has at various times tried to institute pogroms against the dwarves, but has been restricted by Imperial decree.
Sethlans
Umur Sethlans is a stunningly attractive twenty-four year old man. He dresses in magnificent splendor of utmost taste and discretion. It is said that he leaves a trail of broken hearts behind him because he cares for nothing other than himself. Luckily, he is generally under the thumb of his mother, the Dowager Sethlans. In her youth, Dowager Sethlans, was said to be among the most beautiful women alive. Yet years of excess and debauchery made her old before her time, despite the best preservative magics that money could buy. A brilliant machavelian politician and a consummate socialite, her influence and spy network is said to reach into every dark corner of the empire. Still very capable, she "retired" early in a perhaps vain attempt to force her spoiled son into more adult roles.
Trade
- Sethlans is known primarily for its world reknowned wines, brandies, and fine liquers.
- Recently (within the last 1000 yrs or so) Sethlans has used its influence to become the major broker of drugs in the West and the main exporter to the East.
Landholdings
- Immense landholdings along the coastal regions and northern Yin Sloth.
- In Ashur Sethlans runs Shiloh district.
Politics
- Desperately wants war with the East particularily Timoro because this upstart petty kingdom has dared outlaw many of Sethlans exports and has been illicitly raiding Sethlans caravans. (i.e. seizing illegal drugs at customs)
- Might consider a rivalry with Erech if its wine was decent, instead the Umur Sethlans makes regular "donations' of fine wine to Umur Erech, so that he may improve his palate.
- Umur Sethlans is attempting to forge closer alliances with Asshakku.
- Currently allied with Sulgi.
Wealth
- Immense and without limit is a nice way to put it.
Historical Notes
- The previous Umur stepped down in honor of her son five years past.
- She is still said to be the power behind him.
- Sethlans is the most decadent of the Noble houses.
Shamshi-adad
Shamshi-adad assumes the mannerisms of the kings of old. He wears his hair and beard long and full in oiled ringlets. He wears the tradition armor and garb for a man of his station. It might look a little less silly on him if he wasn't 14 yrs old and wearing a wig. This is however the tradition of his household and one had better not laugh. He is a precocious lad and carries on the family warrior tradition with much zest and enthusiasm. However he is counseled by one of the most respected generals and tacticians that the west has produced in several generations, the Turtan Aroch BeshTaruum.Trade
- Interested in trade only to support its military endavors
- Tends to engage in risky trading practices when in need of money
- Also tends to borrow from the other houses and then pay back after a conquest

Politics
- War would be nice. Preferably not in Yin Sloth, but anywhere else is fine.
- War means glory for Shamshi-adad!!!!
- The members of this house do not get along well with any of the other households. They tend to be considered a little dull.
- The Umur has been granted the God-Kings presence a great deal of late.
Wealth
- For one of the noble house this one is essentially poverty stricken, though this does not mean they are without power or influence. Just that it takes money to field an army.
Historical Notes
- For the past twenty years they have been involved in raising troops and skirirmishes along the Northern border.
- Their troops hold Phi and the Enkenkur of Phi was appointed by the Umur Shamshi-Adad.
Shurrupak
Shurrupak is wealth incarnate. He wears fire opals and diamonds. His magnificent clothes are sewn with thread of gold. Precious jewels adorn his brow. He eats only the finest of foods from dishes of gold and alabaster. He is not a tall man and so he wears the resultant girth quite poorly. It is joked (behind his wide back) that it takes three strong slaves to lower him from his palanquin. He blames his size, however, on an old battle wound in his left leg and not on his lifestyle. One would mock this at peril of his life. Mighty Shurrupak is a remarkable businessman and it seems as if every deal he makes turns to his advantage. Nearly all the Umurs and many foreign heads of state are deep in his debt. he and Lugalzaggessi have become close friends in recent years.Trade
- Shurrupak are the bankers, investors, and moneychangers of the empire
- It is said that the gods have favored them for ancient services and if the wealth of this household is any indication, it must indeed be true.
- Shurrupak has for the last generation been strict about investing only in Western business ventures. This has led to some missed opportunities for them, but such is the price of loyalty.
Landholdings
- Shurrupak is powerful in the westerly city states and in Ashur they run the Great Market and funded the new Dockside.
- Originated as the priest kings of the city state of ****** which is still their homecity and the base of their power.
Politics
- Historically this house attempts to stay carefully neutral, but the current Umur is an outspoken patriot. She has called for the destruction of the hated Wolfen.
- This house still has powerful ties within the clergy of Anu, Shamash, and Inanna.
Wealth
- It is said that one-tenth of the wealth of the world must be held by the Shurrupak. This surely must be an exaggeration, but people keep saying it.
- In the last two dozen years this house has made 1000 fortunes on the business of moneychanging eastern gold into western silver. Rumor has it that much of this wealth now fills the war coffers of the God-King.
- Darker rumors suggest that the Shurrupak policies are responsible for the economic downfall of the east which has impoverished all but their farmers, has near starved city dwellers, and driven their nobility to seek new lands on their borders.
Historical Notes
- Shurrupak has traditional close ties with Eresh and Lugalzeggsi and a fierce rivalry with Zabaalum
- Most of their household are worshippers of Shamash and they have powerful ties within the temple and clergy of that diety.
- It is believed by many that the lineage of the God-King has some sort of influence on their policies over and above that which would be expected
- They are ruthless and completely without mercy to those who default on their loans.
- Shurrupak maintains moneychanger booths at convenient places in the Great Market and all the major temples. It is said to be difficult for a temple to a foreign god to be erected without accepting the presence of a Shurrupak moneychangers booth.
- Shurrupak allows competitors in the money changing operations, however those that are too successful tend to have streaks of ill-fortune.
Sulgi
Sulgi is a desperate woman. In her early thirties, and already worry lines trace her not unhandsome face. She dresses in silken garments in the most cutting edge of Ashur fashion. She, as many Sulgi do, sees herself as an artist, a poet, a gourmand, and someone who is truly prepared to engage and appreciate all the finer more cultured things in life. Unfortunately she comes from a long-line of nobility that saw themselves this way and so the family fortune (which supports this elegant lifestyle) is very nearly extinguished. She thus succeeds in being only an angst-ridden aesthete.Trade
- The house of Sulgi is known for its artists (not performers), architects, and aesthetes.
- They maintain a college of the arts at the Ezida
- This house has fallen on hard times of late and the clan has supported itself with funds from the sale of antiquities and works of art
- Having neglected trade as a concerted effort for centuries, they have few other sources to draw upon.
- Noted for extravagant lifestyles, the clan is making short work of their final source of income.
- They might have already collapsed if it were not for the friendship of Sethlans.
Landholdings
- Sulgi has few landholdings left of worth, having brokered them to Eresh.
- They still maintain at vast expense a number of manor houses throughout major cities and a splendid family villa on the coast of the Sea of Scarlet Waters.
Politics
- Sulgi tends to vote as Umur Sethlans would wish it.
- Umur Sulgi spends much time of late with Umur Ashakku
- Sulgi tends to give disdain to Eresh and the warrior households. Apparently she feels that she is somehow superior to those uncultured and brutish types. Eresh responds with dislike and the warrior houses with laughter.
- Constant conflict with Ninazu over skilled worker relations. Mostly over the laziness and incompetence of the tradesmen their liason appoints. "A structure must adorn the landscape like a jewel on a maidens white breast"
Wealth
- This household is having hard times and resent the fact that their funds are not unlimited
- Umur Sulgi refuses to come to terms with the reality of the situation.
- The wealth of Sethlans has come to the rescue, currently the price is only support in the council. As for the future....
Historical Notes
- In the recent past (less than 1000 yrs) Sulgi had created an income from the immense construction industry of the west. Sulgi architects are superior and have recouse to millenia of lore. In the last generation there has been little funds from the God-King's coffers for works of art, new temples, or public works. In fact an aquaduct project to relieve Red Hook water supply problems has been shelved for 40 yrs.
- In the distant past Sulgi was the landholders of vast tracks of forest land. Millenia of clearcutting and then brokering the farmland to Eresh has left them without resource. The west has little in the way of forest left.

Tarquin
Umur Tarquin is not a large man, yet people who meet him always remember him as such. He has a commanding "presence" that is given further weight by his impressive garments reminiscent of the ancient order of Qurub, yet finely retouched by artists to imply a tasteful respect for modern fashion. When he speaks others grow silent. When he is angered others grow fearful. It is well known that the honor of Tarquin is above reproach and he disdains many of the political games of the other nobility. Umur Tarquin is a man that commands the respect of all, and most especially his enemies.Trade
- Traditionally this household has been little concerned with trade and more concerned with matters of honor.
- This attitude over the millenia has served to impoverish the house and strip it of time-honored possessions.
- A few hundred years ago the Umur Tarquin began the covert sale of noble titles to wealthy merchants. Since Tarquin had always refused to take part in this practice a Tarquin title was more respected and in high demand. The father of the current Umur put a stop to this practice.
- The Tarquins used this income, an age old interest in livestock (horses in particular), and the notes of breeders dating back 4000 yrs to establish themselves as the finest breeders of horses in the world. This has had the effect of bringing new money into the household in an honorable way.
- The fortunes of this house are on the rise again.
Landholdings
- Large holdings in the Western countryside, the city state of ****, and near the borders of the Ophid's grasslands.
- In Ashur the house has holdings in *****.

- Favors any landwar for territory.
Wealth
- Not the wealthiest of households.
- Little liquid capital, most being tied up in livestock.
- Lacks many of the historical treasures the other houses take for granted.
Historical Notes
- This household maintains the ancient tradition of the Qurub (charioteers/knighthood)
- Places great stock on honorable conduct and thus holds great repute amongst common folk.
- Legend and accepted scholarship maintains this to be the oldest noble bloodline in the world.
- Maintains a fighting force of Qurub for the Empire, perhaps the finest force in the world of Palladium.
- The current Umur has been highly praised in public by the God-King for wise council and loyalty.
Urnammu
Umur Urnammu, despite his age of 65, is a man in the peak of physical condition. After a life of harsh military training and discipline, he is said to be a master of most weapons and forms of unarmed combat. His major failing is as a tactician and a politician and is known to be rash and hasty in his judgments. He stands average height and wears armor made by a legendary Dwarven smith. He bears the sword of his lineage the legendary rune-blade, Terrible Shall Be My Retribution.Trade
- Not alot of this happening.
- Other houses will often pay "protection" to Urnammu when passing through the borderlands.
Landholdings
- Is the landholder of Phi.
- Some important holdings in Yin Sloth and the old Kingdom borders.
- Urnammu has often been granted control over the "marches" of the west.
Politics
- Favors a landwar against the North.
- Umur Ashakku has publically threatened the Umur Urnammu. Urnammu challenged a duel and Ashakku refused. Urnammu has since publically mocked him. I don't think this needs further explanation.
- Absolute support of the Imperial agenda.
Wealth
- Relies upon old investments and monies to support itself.
- The God-King has been heavily funding them of late.
History
- The current Umur is a war hero of the subjugation of Phi.

Zabaalum
Zabaalum stands tall amongst the Umurs, dressed in her traditional house colors of seablue and silver contrasting well with the long gray hair. Herself an accomplished sailor and ship-captain (she spent years of her youth on the island Kingdom of Byzantium), she has a talent for judging the correct person to sail her ships. Seamen who sail for Zabaalum are paid and treated well and are said to never desire to sail for another. She herself is a cunning foe and a careful ally. He words are sparse and carefully chosen, leading to the respect of most of the other Umurs if not their favor.Trade
- The premier trading house it is heavily invested in the sea trade.
- Often acts as a moneylenders to the other houses.
- Owns a fleet of ships as numerous as the Byzantium Royal Fleet.
- Commonly sells titles to the wealthy.
Landholdings
- Is influential in the City State of ******
- In Ashur Zabaalum runs Dockside, has landholder rights to Breakwater in perpetuity, and were the primary investors in the Grand Quay.
Politics
- Attempting to forge closer alliances with Assakku
- Loaning money freely to Shamshi-Adad
- Opposing any military endavors (bad for business)
- Currently Eresh and Tarquin is in debt too.
- Is building a private fleet of warships to deal with the pirate problem in the Sea of Scarlet Waters
- In opposition to Sethlans as a matter of course, though an unusual alliance has arisen in that neither favor war.
Wealth
- Mostly tied up in assets and loans.
- Currently attempting some riskier ventures for quick return.
History
- More interested in money than tradition.
