What's in a Name is a unit that can be taught to 2nd and 3rd graders in 6-8 weeks. 

Final Project Description

Students create their own short melodic line--a musical "coat of arms"--based on the letters from the music alphabet that are in their names.

Skills emphasized 

Students :

bulletRecognize and perform a simple vocabulary of duple rhythms and stepwise tonal patterns. 
bulletBecome familiar with the staff.
bulletLearn the letter names of the treble clef  lines and spaces.
bulletLearn to write quarter, half, whole and eighth notes and know how many counts each rhythm unit gets.
bulletRead different time signatures and put in measure bar lines.
bulletLearn to perform dynamics and recognize their markings.
bulletPerform accompaniments or melodies as part of an ensemble.
