Chapter 12 - Life is about falling, living is about getting back up
---------------
Nikki's eyes strayed to the side, focused more on the blonde pressed against her than the scene they were supposed to be watching. In the close quarters, all Nikki could think about was how sweet Nora Delaney smelled and how... lickable she seemed from this vantage point.
Trying to pull her mind from the gutter, Nikki trained her eyes back on the small monitor, the camera trained on the pawnshop across the street. Her mind once more began to wander as she wished she could also rein her other senses in from inhaling the heavenly aroma, feeling the delectable skin brushing against her, almost tasting those lips... She took in a deep breath hoping to high heaven the groan building in her chest did not escape.
Of course her agony was all her own fault. She knew about the pawnshop, having worked it a year or so ago for a case. Having thought about the teasing they'd done at the grill, she'd suggested they camp out across the street. Many of the shops were empty in this neighborhood.
It'd been easy to go and look around the shop earlier, placing a couple of microphones. A little more work to find that the best place to see the counter and shop would be a storage shaft in the empty shop. The conduit's size only slightly bigger than an air conditioning duct; the shaft having connected the delivery bay with a storage room. What was proving most difficult, and something Nikki had not yet mentioned to Nora, was securing the paperwork to make what they were doing… legal.
Nora sneezed, breaking Nikki's concentration, the blonde rolling a bit against the detective. "Sorry, I swear, if a rat crawls in here with us, I absolve myself from any harm I may inflict on you as I try to scramble out of here." She twisted enough so Nikki could see the teasing grin.
"Afraid of a little rodent?"
"Hey, those little pests bite and are nasty."
"Well, I happen to bite, going to scramble away from me?"
Nora's eyes narrowed, the blonde rotating so she pressed her entire body against the detective, this time making sure it was her leg pressed between Nikki's. An evil smirk crept across her face as she heard Nikki groan. "Something the matter Detective? You seem a little out of breath."
"That seems to happen quite a bit when I am around you and under your spell PD Delaney." She replied, her voice low and raspy.
Nora's smile faded, her gaze focused completely on Nikki's eyes, looking for and finding the detective's desire. Her fingers trailed along Nikki's jaw, cupping and pulling the woman to her as she leaned forward, her lips gentle as they embraced Nikki.
The kiss deepened, the two forgetting everything else as they savored the moment.
"I must be with an angel I hear bells," Nora joked as she pulled away, panting a bit as her eyes could not stop moving, wanting to take in every detail of Nikki's face.
"I have been called many things, but never compared to a heavenly creature. Actually I think it is the bell above the pawnshop door, meaning..." she stopped as her eyes had drifted to the monitor, her eyes flaring. "Garrison's arrived and oh my god Nora, that's..."
"Judge O'Reilly," Nora whispered, the lawyer choking over the words, unable to completely believe the Justice had walked in after Garrison. She let go of Nikki and scrambled to start the audio and video recording.
"Heya Hercules, I brought my sugar daddy," Garrison called out to the pawnshop owner as he leaned over the counter to shake the man's hand and greet him.
The judge grimaced as he came up, nodding at the owner. "Were you able to accomplish what we asked?"
The owner nodded, walking over to the door, turning the sign to closed. "I can hook you up just sweet and dandy."
He knelt behind the counter, working a safe. He drew out a box and set it on the counter. "Payment?"
The judge reached into his jacket and pulled out a thick envelope, throwing it next to the box.
"No wonder Garrison's case sailed through. Why though?" Nora mused, chewing on her thumbnail.
Nikki tore her watchful eyes from the exchange. She found herself completely taken with how the lawyer looked, deep in thought. Nikki could almost hear the gears turning, the links being made. A deep admiration for the blonde began to bubble up. "You are so intense Nora Delaney." Nikki blushed then as Nora looked up, the detective belatedly realizing she said that out loud.
"You think this is something, you should see me play Monopoly." Both women smiled, the electric tension easing just a bit.
"What about that wiretap transcript we found?" Nikki asked.
"Say what?"
Nikki blushed as she tried to figure out how to keep from telling Nora the string of events that had lead to that thought.
The word Monopoly made the detective think about Park Place.
This led to a thought about the Park Place Jewelers on Magazine.
That triggered a thought about a certain necklace the store had in its display; the reason for that thought purely selfish as she was certain it would look splendid around Nora's neck.
But she knew the blonde would not easily accept something that expensive, this from the conversation they'd had during one of their research sessions.
It was during this session they had found the reference to a wiretap P.I.B. had authorized during the Garrison investigation; a meeting Desters had not known about. It had been Garrison talking to someone he kept referring to as his sugar daddy. He'd been asked to set it up to make sure a certain witness did not make it to a trial. Nora and Nikki had done more legwork and found out the witness never showed up and the trial was thrown out.
Nora's smile consumed her entire face as she reached out and drew Nikki to her in an agitated manner, spontaneously kissing the woman on the lips before letting her go, her excitement tempered by a shyness at her impetuous action. "You are brilliant. That's part of it I am sure. I didn't even think anything about it, but O'Reilly was the judge on that case. The judge must have been using Garrison; it was the judge on the phone that night. But who was the third person they talked about? The one who was pulling all the strings and organizing everything? Maybe if we can go through his old docket lists and see what cases were dismissed..."
Nikki simply shook her head, enjoying the way Nora looked and acted when excited. Especially the way the dimple was exaggerated, the blonde's olive skin flushed from her fervor. ~~I could never get enough of how this woman looks and acts. She is just so, alive...~~
"You know, if it was about cases and getting people off, maybe it is someone in the police department. But why not just kill him, get rid of him? Why go to the trouble of getting him off?" Nora pushed on the bridge of her glasses to reseat them higher on her face.
"Maybe Garrison has insurance?" Nikki suggested.
"Makes sense, he's not an idiot." Nora shivered a little thinking back to the glimpse of his cunning she'd gotten during the case review.
"And maybe they are not done?"
Nora nodded, her facial expression grim as she was coming to the same conclusion.
"I can check around, try to see if anyone else was linked to these cases." Nikki offered.
Nora bit her lip, slowly nodding. "Yeah, but... be careful, I don't want you to..." She shrugged then, stepping back from her hesitant approach, afraid she might be sounding condescending or as if she did not have confidence in the detective's ability.
Reaching out, Nikki covered Nora's hand. "Thanks,"
Nora let out the breath she was holding, the brunette's reply perfect.
"So, Garrison I did what you wanted and in about 20 minutes that little court reporter that likes to nose too much will be floating belly up. She's on some assignment at the waterpark near Canntel, should make for quite a show." The pawnshop owner laughed as he finished counting the payment money. "Now, about that other one you want to take care of... I know just the person who can lure them right in..."
Nikki's hand tightened around Nora's. "That's about 10 minutes from here."
Nora was already wiggling backwards to get out of the shaft. "Come on. By the time we call this in and anyone believes us...."
On the same wavelength, Nikki followed, "The equipment."
"We can get it later; as much as I do not like Ms. Barreta... I do not feel like letting Garrison and the Judge win. If we stop this..."
As Nora waited for Nikki to get out of the shaft, she dialed information and got the number for the TV station.
"Hello, yes, listen, Ms. Barreta is in danger. You need to get a hold of her and tell her to leave the waterpark where she is." Nora glanced at the pawnshop, seeing the three men still conferencing. "What? No I am not some sicko. My name is Nora Delaney, someone is going to try and kill her."
She opened her car door as Nikki slid into the driver's seat. "What? Wait, no, don't do that... I am not making a threat against... she is in danger. Just, call her, tell her..." Nora looked helplessly at Nikki, the brunette shrugging as she had no idea what to suggest. "She needs to get a new hairstyle." Nora hung up, groaning.
"Some people will never listen, best just to move on and try not to get too steamed." Nikki said. "Here, dial this number and then hand me the phone. Maybe I can get someone to listen and at least send units to meet us."
Holding on to the dashboard as Nikki made a sharp turn as she recited the number, Nora dialing, "The way things have been going lately, I am not going to believe this will help until I see the flashing lights...."
-----------
"Heya Barb," Nora greeted the cat as she closed her front door. Purring loudly, the animal began rubbing against its owner's legs. Nora placed her mail in a bin and setting a package that had been at her door on a small table in the hall. She looked again at the top corner of the package, assuming it was from Nikki as the return address was the NOPD precinct.
Returning to her normal habit, she deposited her keys, glasses and other personal effects next to the mail. Her attention shifted down, just watching as the cat continued to rub and weave between her legs. "Someone is hungry and trying to butter me up. Alright, fine, but nothing fancy. I am dead tired. Damn reporter, didn't even thank us for saving her ass." She began explaining her day to Barbarella as they both headed to the kitchen. Nora scooping up the package and bringing it along.
"I mean god, we break our butts getting there and all she wants is an interview and to bust my balls about what I did." Nora continued the rant as she went about serving the cat, nodding at the occasional sound from the cat as if it were taking part in the conversation and encouraging Nora.
"Meow."
"Exactly, no one cares these days. And, check this out Barb, Nikki's boss, he said this was nothing that could be used. They got the guy, but he'd been contacted over the phone and was not getting any money until after it was done. Which is pretty stupid on his part, I at least would have demanded a little down." She waved a spoon at the animal, the animal giving a pitiful yeowl as it wanted what Nora was fixing.
"Then it seems there was something wrong with the audio track, so we couldn't hear anything. I know Nikki said she'll have a techie look at it tomorrow, but still, someone could have been a little more intense about what we found. But nooooo, all we get is a 'cold hard proof ladies'. What kind of answer is that? No wonder Nikki is fed up with working there." She had started to bend down to give the cat the food, but stood up at the last moment as she was swept up in her speech. The cat standing on its hind legs, scratching at Nora's upper leg in a pleading manner.
"Now where are we? Screwed. That's where we are. Ow, hey..." She looked down as the kitty dropped to a sitting position, its claws retracting. "You are supposed to do that on your scratching post..." she scolded. Kneeling, she placed the food down, smiling as she heard the cat's purring increase a moment before it charged the food.
She turned her attention to the package. "So what is this? More files?" She joked as she ripped the paper off, freezing as she saw the writing on the box. "I thought I told you not to do this Detective. Shit, great, now she thinks I am a needy case, or greedy or worse."
The blonde moved over to the sink, frustrated as she brought the box over. She looked at it as she got a glass of water; it was the same model camera as she'd lost. She heard the cat meow focusing on the animal, "Traitor, don't take her side. Sure, maybe it is going to be a little bit before I can replace it, but I am not a damn charity case. I really thought she was different..." Nora trailed off as she noticed there was a small envelope taped to the one side. She pulled at it, the envelope ripping, two small cards spilling out.
She read the first one out loud, "Ms. Delaney, the Citizens Organization for Police Support wishes to thank you for your dedication to New Orleans, law enforcement and for helping to keep her citizens safe.
We wanted to send this camera to replace the one lost so you can continue to provide the excellent level of service. Again, thank you." The bottom of the card contained over 15 signatures. Biting her lip, Nora looked at the second card.
"I kept my promise and did not buy you the camera. I just told someone about how good of a lawyer you are stuck in a shit system. Do not try and return this, those ladies are feisty, trust me. Thank you Nora."
Nora found herself smiling as she traced a finger over Nikki's signature. "You are quite magnificent yourself Nikki Beaumont."
