------------------------------------ "Dreams are very revealing..." The scientist muttered. He looked over at the centrifuge. "So what was it then John? What caused you to... take a moment to see me?" John glanced over at him. "Hmm?" "Nothing, you lovesick pup." Tesla turned away, going over to the machine. "I think this is complete. Best you be striding your white horse and riding to the rescue of your fair maiden." He managed to push down the brief flair of emotion that had bubbled over from hope lingering from a past life. John straightened and walked over to remove the test tube from the centrifuge. "Excuse me?" he raised his eyebrows at Nikola. "Nothing old man, leave it be." Nikola replied in a gruff voice. "Just hurry up, and make sure to make enough for every one. This whatever has touched all of us." John carried the blood over to a table, carefully setting out the materials to extract the appropriate parts of his blood. The tip of his tongue poked out of his mouth as he concentrated. "You still do that...' Tesla stage whispered, then held up his hands, "Yes, yes, I know, you need quiet." He moved closer, watching John work. : After a while John came up with a beaker of a faintly pinkish substance. "I think this may be it..." "Think? How much of this is certainty and how much are you doing a bit of guessing?" Tesla peered at the beaker. "It is the absolute best I can do," John replied, giving him a hard look. "Your best has always been superior. Why do you think I kept you around?" Tesla offered a small tease. He rolled up his sleeve. "Do you want to test it?" John nodded, then filled a syringe with the substance, then cleaned a spot on Nikola's arm. "This may hurt a tad," he teased, then injected it into Tesla. "It what?" Tesla's face took on a look of uncertainty. "You could have...." He trailed off, his face seeing to go even paler. He looked around, as if lost. His face then started to contort in pain. He clutched his stomach, looking at his arm where he had been injected. "John, I am going to kill you for this..." he made gagging noises and stumbled along the counter, knocking off an item or two before dropping to his hands and knees in front of John. John frowned, then dropped to his knees beside Tesla. "Not that much..." he muttered, gripping the other man's shoulders. "Nikola! Look at me..." Nikola looked up, his face morphing into a large grin. "Oh how sweet, you are on your hands and knees for me, bring back memories does it?" He was laughing hard now. John rolled his eyes. "Oh you bastard..." he growled, getting back up again. "Get off the floor." "But I like it down here, you over me. Growling." Still laughing, he crawled a bit and began to stand. "I felt a slight discomfort, but it seems to have passed. Much like that corned beef I had last month in Belfast." "Oh your sense of humor is second to none," John said sarcastically, preparing an injection for Helen. "I still got it..." He quipped, coming over to stand near Helen. John rolled his eyes and carefully injected the needle into Helen's vein. The lab was silent, not even the breathing of the occupants seeming to make a dent in the oppressive silence. Then, there was a rustle, a breeze of movement, a flicker of a finger and a sharp intake of breath as Helen's eyes fluttered, the doctor coming round. "Helen?" John said quietly, reaching down to touch her hand. The touch brought more awareness, a slight discomfort, her body ached. She was so tired. She gripped the lifeline, "Water? Please." She whispered, trying to clear away the confusion. John squeezed her hand and looked towards Tesla. "Nikola?" he murmured. About to make a comment about being no one's servant boy, he looked at Helen a moment and then turned to go and find some water. "John?" Helen whispered finally able to latch onto something she recognized. Her eyes a bit watery, she blinked a number of times, John's face finally coming into view. "I am here..." John said, taking her hand between both of his. "How do you feel?" "Like I have been dragged to hell and back tied to the back of a 1950 Talbot." She said, a smile gracing her face. "I, am finding my recent memory a bit... spotty." Nikola came over with a glass of water. Handing it to John John took the glass. "Nikola's brought some water for you...why don't you try to sit up a bit..." "What happened?" She asked, struggling up, wincing a little as her sore muscles protested. John helped her sit, putting the glass of water in her hands. "We all went a bit crazy, I'm afraid..." he said. "I managed to synthesize an antidote from my blood. Whatever it was seemed to hit you harder than Nikola or I..." "Antidote..." A speculative look crossed her face. "I was chasing a theory... it seems to have proved a worthwhile chase." "Please send out invites next time you go chasing Helen dear." Tesla said, smoothing out his clothes as he headed toward the lab door. John looked at him. "Leaving so soon?" he asked, tilting his head to the side. "I believe I am not needed here." Tesla replied. "Unless there is reason to stay." John looked down at Helen, as though seeing what she wanted. Helen finished the water, it helping her dry mouth. "How do you feel?" "If I said on death's door, would it get me sympathy sex?" Tesla joked using a cavalier tone. Helen shook her head no, a ghost of a smile adorning her face. "Then I will bid you adieu. No telling when there maybe more ruffians beating down the door." He bowed deeply then. "I trust we will see you again, far sooner than is necessary?" John said, half teasing, half being serious as he rubbed his thumb over the back of Helen's hand. "Perhaps, scoundrels are always loved and despised. To quote an odd duck. Don't call us, we'll call you." He gave them a wink and a wave before leaving. "He was probably more of a help then I'd like to admit," John said, pulling up a chair and sitting next to Helen's bed. "Really? Some things never change." Chuckling a bit, she looked around. "It seems this place has been found out. I will need to evacuate, shame." She sighed and then began working her way out of bed. John put an arm around her shoulders. "I can take us back to the Sanctuary," he offered. The doctor nodded at this suggestion. "I will send out a team to clean this place out. I think I need a bit of a rest. Been quite the day." John nodded, then abruptly took them back to the library in Sanctuary. "That it has..." he agreed once they'd regained their footing. Helen held onto John, readjusting from the transport. "Thank you John." Her thanks more than for the simple transport. John nodded, keeping his hands on her waist. "It was nothing," he murmured, looking down at her. She said nothing in response. The quiet a shared moment of peace. Finally, "If you wish to stay to recuperate, I can have a guest room prepared." John nodded, then for the briefest of moments wrapped his arms around her in a lose embrace, resting his cheek lightly against her hair. Helen neither accepted nor rejected the embrace, although she could feel both reactions stirring, clamoring for a place. She closed her eyes, trying to recall a night. One so long ago, and one that had kept her heart from growing completely distant. "What are you thinking?" John asked quietly, moving his hands back to her sides and reluctantly taking a step back. "Cherished memories." She replied. Her eyes the only portion of her body that moved to follow John's actions. John held her gaze for a few moments and he allowed her a faint smile. "I see," he said quietly, bringing one hand up to brush a loose lock of her hair from her face. "That is all," She meant to keep it at that. The pain and distance still vivid and raw. Yet, she could not stop herself from adding, "For now." John sighed, sensing her draw back. He let his hand fall and drew into himself, nodding. Glancing away he wasn't sure how to respond. A missed moment, she knew, a fork of two pathways and she had veered to one side. What-ifs left for the other choice. One that she was not prepared to make today... but perhaps... there was always a perhaps. "If you do stay the night, I can offer breakfast as well. I have been told my waffles are divine." John looked up at her and smiled at the invitation, nodding. "I would like that. It is not as though I have anywhere else to go." Again she put up her reserve, simply nodding at the comment rather than feeding her curiosity as to where John had been for so long. "Fine, now if you will escort me to my room, my legs are still a bit unsteady. I can show you your room along the way. I will let Bigfoot know you are not to be disturbed. I recommend you do not roam, I have not been able to let others know of my contacting you." John nodded, offering her his arm. "To bed then," he said, giving her a weak smile. For a split second he felt a flash of the same feelings he'd felt so long ago, and yet then it was gone. Helen linked her arm with his, leaning on him for support as they headed down the hallways. "You do realize I will expect a full report of what went on at the lab. For scientific documentation." "And to make sure Nikola and I didn't get up to too much trouble?" John asked, his tone light. "Especially that." She paused and then added. "You can also tell me about some of those hills and valleys Nikola referenced. I will put on an extra pot of tea." John blinked at her and coughed slightly. "It was nothing, Helen." Arching an eyebrow at the response, Helen puckered her lips a little. "Of course not, which is why I shall enjoy it even more on the morrow." Her lips quirked a bit, as she watched John put on the spot. "You're being cruel," John said, teasing. "Very well, I suppose I owe you whatever you could ask of me." "Wise man, although it is I that owe you." She slowed as they reached her door. "We will barter more in the morning. The room two doors down from mine should provide fitting." "Thank you." John hesitated, looking down at her for a long moment. She met his gaze, holding it for many beats. "IS there something else you need?" "Yes..." John said before he could stop himself. Then he smiled and looked down. "But not now." There will be other times." She moved back then, opening the door to her room. "Good night John, rest well." John bowed, smiling as he took a step back. "Good night, Helen." With a nod, Helen moved into her room, closing the door. She leaned back against it, eyes closed, collecting herself for a moment before heading to her washroom. John turned as the door clicked shut and headed to his own room. Somehow, with the promise of another day to talk to her, he felt the weight that had been bearing down on him lift a little. But first, he would rest. He knew that waking in the morning would, for once, be all the easier. fini story complete - main page contact: docwho2000@hotmail.com page last modified - April 23, 2009 graphics from www.eosdev.com |
