disclaimer: Birds of Prey and all its characters still belong to DC Comics and Warner Brothers. Chris Carter and the crew own X-Files. No ill intent meant just bringing the characters further to life.

Consensual relationship depicted between adult women in this story. If you have a problem with that or are under 18 please do not read.

AUTHORS' NOTES – I am sure this has been done before, in fact we would not be surprised if this general storyline exists at least in the same general vein as I set it up– if it does – YAY and please let us know where those stories are so we can go read. As such, this is our first attempt at BoP or X-Files fanfic.

Saying that, feedback is welcome especially if this is a lot like other stuff out there.

Overview

This is a story about women, three in particular, who come together to keep a city and the world in general safe. It is a cross over between the TV version (not the comic book although I love the comic books) of Birds of Prey and the X-Files.

The timing for Dana Scully is about three to four years after the last season of X-Files and treats most of the seasons as canon but then things change a bit after that.

The timing is just under two years after the last episode of Birds of Prey with the fallout from Harley Quinn still very much on everyone's mind.

--------
Four years is a long time, and not only long but has been extremely lonely. Well for Dana Scully it had been long and lonely. She's kept to herself the last few years working to make the world a better place for her son and people in general. She made the choice to seclude her son, sending him to a friend who would raise him as her nephew along with their children. She still talks to her son and visits but it is better this way. Until she knows the full extent of what he is, hell even what she is, this is better.

Considering people would always be after William and that this setup means a slightly normal lifestyle for her son, Dana took the logical choice, head over heart was her motto and even though the X-files had changed that somewhat, it still was her main Modus Operandi. When all else fails, fall back on your science and training. Sure some would say fall back on love and family and such, but Dana really didn't have those things, not anymore. They'd all been taken away from her. Not that she said good riddance but she sure had not gone out of her way to try and get them back. She was done with that.

Dana Scully has been offered a new position, a supposed promotion, to be the Director of the small field office in New Gotham. Very small office as the office consists of a Director, a field agent and a secretary. Okay, two field agents, the Director doubles as a field agent.

Turns out the New Gotham office has a reputation worse than the X-Files did. Rather than escaping the specter of her former work, she is thrust, nay immersed back into a world with views and ideas that vary a bit from what her FBI superiors call normal. Oh well, so much for being an average FBI agent.

Barbara Gordon AKA Oracle has been trying to rebuild. Sure she managed to hold her own for a bit and experience the joy of walking, but it turns out the device actually has a price for that. It builds toxins as part of the interface, toxins which if they build up too high mean a one way ticket to the morgue. So her research continues in that area but her one possible glimmer of hope has become more of a taunt of what she had.

On top of that her relationship with Helena still remains strained. No matter how hard she tries, her partner, her maybe protégé, her secret desire and the person she was named to be legal guardian for continues to drift. The damage done by Harley Quinn still controlling the young woman and keeping Barbara and anyone else at bay. This action in turn tears at Oracle and keeps her from healing as well.

She managed to rebuild Delphi, to resume her Oracle duties, but her heart has not been in it and she finds herself spending more and more energy to do just the simplest tasks. Her logical mind has been kept busy trying to keep New Gotham and other parts of the world free from crime and providing a helping hand for those who can't always help themselves. The problem is Barbara sorely needs a hand herself and if she doesn't find one soon, she may find herself sunk too deep in with no way out even for someone as brilliant as her

Helena, AKA Huntress, should be on the top of her game and in some ways is. Her fighting skills have increased, she is learning to anticipate scenes better, more gadgets and better Oracle information all mean she does not get caught by surprise as much these days, well at least not when it comes to down and dirty fighting.

Seems anything else is still far from her mastery reach and seems to be moving further away. Helena insists she is working to be better but she finds more nights than not wanting to replay the scene, do a second take as the first take, the one for the record books is.... while getting the job done, barely, the first take just seems wrong.

And often it is wrong. Sloppy, fearless, vigilante, crazed, isolated... all adjectives she is running from yet each one sticks with her tighter and tighter. Seems for every right thing she does, she fails at two others, especially anything to do with social interaction. The Huntress has become all hunter and nothing else. She finally took a small piece from her father's fortune and bought the Dark Horse bar, but even that distraction does not help. Only those long nights standing in the shadows on the balcony listening to the whir of the machine fans and typing of computer keys soothed by the smells and sounds from the woman typing away inside seems to be right. It is during these long dark twilight hours that she tries to figure out, figure out what went wrong, why she is here on the outside when all she wants is to be inside, inside with the one person she has convinced herself she can never have.

Dinah is around, she and Gabby became part of a group aimed at cultural diversity and have spent the last year traveling around, a sort of exchange program. Barbara was reluctant but could see that she was losing Dinah as well as having lost Helena and thought perhaps, perhaps this might save the young girl. Besides it had kept her close to the one person she had started to develop feelings for besides Barbara and Helena and while Oracle longed for those feelings to be showered on her by a certain brunette, she'd not deny anyone those same feelings, in fact she knew she'd do anything to make sure they were experienced, including allowing Dinah to become like her namesake and fly free.

It also does not hurt that the head of the youth program is a metahuman to and he recognizes the gifts many metas possess as just that – gifts to be celebrated and used. So he and the others help train Dinah as well as allow for her to develop crime-fighting abilities. Besides in this technology age Dinah never seems that far away, just a phone call or computer chat line is all.
