Chapter 19 - Candy From Strangers (Brittney Spears)

Arkham Asylum / clock tower, Thursday morning 12:26am

------------------------------------

Pacing behind her desk, Kate looked at everything that she'd received so far: the picture, the files that Barbara had opened, and now, flowers. Holding her phone tight against her ear she bit her lip, waiting for the ringing to stop and Dana's voice to answer.

Nodding at the instructions the security guard was rattling off, Dana watched the door shut behind her. Hearing each lock click into place brought the reality of the situation closer to her. Although she was one small step closer to Helena's cell, the chaos was making it hard to get to her destination. She was listening to a group go over a new sweep pattern, a number of patients had been released somehow, when her phone began to ring.

"Scully." She replied answering the phone, not looking at the display as her eyes were trained on the map of Arkham and the plans the guard was laying out.

"Dana. I know that you're busy. I'm sorry, but I got another one," Kate said, running a hand through her hair before biting her lower lip again.

"Another one?" Dana tilted her head away from the briefing as she moved to a corner of the small guard station. "Kate?" Her voice quickly filled with concern. "Are you ok? How could you... "

"It scared the shit outta me when the knock came at the door. Apparently they paid someone to drop this off right at Midnight. Whoever it is... I think they think I'm someone else," Kate admitted. "That I'm good with computers... And, I'm supposed to go somewhere, a cafe, or it says they're going to hurt Helena."

"Barbara is thinking along the same lines." Dana frowned deeply. "You don't know anything about a Daniel Stampers or the state agricultural research center downtown, right?"

"He was in the news, some big corruption thing or something?" Kate mused. "But no, I don't know anything else..."

"That's what I thought. It seems somehow either you are being used to get to Barbara or someone thinks you are someone else." Dana closed her eyes as she rubbed wearily at her eye. "How were you contacted this time?"

"Flowers," Kate said softly. "I'm supposed to go to a 24 hour cafe a few blocks from here, and log onto a secure network. Whoever's behind this wants to 'talk'."

"Flowers? Talk?" Her eyes had strayed to the small group finalizing her plans, she thought of Helena locked away and the way someone had been able to make all of this happen. The same person who wanted to draw Kate into this demented game. She didn't want Kate to be dragged into this. "I don't think that is a wise thing to do. This person is playing a very dangerous game."

"And what about Helena?" Kate asked, easily picking up on the redhead's concern.

"Helena's already in trouble and I am able to get to her," Dana paused watching the guards starting to prepare to leave. "You, I can't get to right this minute. I don't want you hurt. This person doesn't seem to have any intention of playing nice."

Kate nodded, not wanting to be useless, but knowing that Dana was right. "I should call Barbara, let her know though, right?"

"Actually she may be stopping by very soon. I thought you could use a friendly face." Dana suddenly felt a spike of helplessness as she could not get in to Helena nor out to Kate.

"I'll give her a call," Kate said, not wanting Dana to worry about things she couldn't control.

"Thank you. I..." she hesitated sighing. "I wish I could do more and as soon as I take care of things here..."

"Then I'll hear from you. I'll be careful. You be careful too," Kate said, not wanting to worry either.

"Of course I will. I've got a very good reason to." Dana felt a small smile develop at that thought. "Besides I do believe it is your turn to think of a place for our next date. Wouldn't want to miss that. Especially since you have a mysterious admirer sending you flowers, should I consider them comeptition?"

"No. I think your place in my life is a very secure one. Go back to work, I know I'll hear from you when you have a chance," Kate said, reluctant to end the call, but knowing that Dana needed to do her job.

"First thing." Dana promised as she hung up. Taking a deep breath, she set her mind back in a professional mode and headed for the guards, determined to get to Helena and to hopefully put an end to this quickly.
