Chapter 2 – Suddenly I See (KT Tunstall)

Deluge Gallery, Saturday evening

----------

Running a hand through her hair, Kate rested it on her hip. She was standing in front of one of her paintings, still not sure that she'd chosen the right art for the show, not to mention the right clothes. She'd gone with a plain pair of black pants, white button down shirt, black shoes, and a loose black tie.

Dana pulled into the parking lot and shut off the engine, looking at her watch. She frowned knowing she was running late. She'd had a bunch of conference calls and a flurry of activity today. Still trying to get settled, she was finding the concept of weekend didn't seem to exist. She had finally gotten clearance to begin searching for an office assistant as well as trying to delve into many of the open case files.

She frowned as she thought over the information what information had come across her office today. The missing persons case was especially worrisome as it involved high school and college students. She planned on Monday checking up on the status of the missing students as well as the odd notes the last Director had scribbled in a folder. Something about a lazer tag reference.

Blowing out a breath, Dana pushed that from her mind as she got out and grabbed her small bag from the back. She ran a hand down along her navy blue suit and hoped she'd be able to find some place to change. The agent hoped to be able to leave work behind for tonight.

She showed her invitation at the door and moved a little further into the gallery trying to locate Kate. As she looked around she ran a hand nervously through her hair rumpling it some.

Frowning, Kate looked at some of the other pieces of artwork in the space, wondering just how one could pretend to compare. Everything on display was from a different genre or had a different focus. Apples, oranges, and tomatoes.

Her eyes finally picked out Kate, she headed that way. She slowed then seeing the pensive look on the artist's face. She paused just behind the woman and looked around. "Is something out of place?" She asked finally wondering what was causing the expression.

Turning, Kate slowly smiled. "Just my nerves, now that you're here anyway," she admitted.

The artist's reply pulled a soft smile to Dana's lips. She stood in place however, uncertain how to greet the artist as they had not been out in public much. Especially not since their relationship had begun to deepen. "Nerves?" Dana glanced at the display. "Why? This is incredible," she turned to look over the pictures.

"Just nerves. Maybe you can help distract me from that?" Kate asked, taking a step toward the redhead, invading her personal space.

Dana hesitated in reaching out, "I'd be willing to give it a try. Um, is it ok to..." she trailed off feeling awkward and still unsure of acceptable actions. Although the nearness of Kate was setting her more on edge and she wanted to show some of the affection she was starting to feel just from being this close to the artist.

"I'm perfectly comfortable with it, but only if you are too," Kate said, not yet making another move toward Dana.

"I'm..." Dana kept her eyes focused on the woman; she knew her cheeks were starting to redden slightly, a side effect of the increasing flush spreading through her system. "I'm new to town and don't know..." She resisted the urge to look around and see if anyone was watching.

Instead she focused on Kate and drew courage from her accepting attitude. Stepping forward, the action bringing Dana against Kate slightly, her free hand rested on Kate's arm as she leaned in for a kiss.

Smiling, Kate leaned to meet Dana. The kiss was rather brief and relatively chaste, but it was more than enough. "Thank you," she said softly.

She let her hand linger a moment more before dropping it back to her side. "Thank you, although not sure that is much of a distraction for nerves. Do you always get nervous before an opening?" Her eyes danced over the brunette's body taking in what she was wearing her thoughts running to how good she looked.

"Yeah, I get nervous when I know someone's going to see my work. I was nervous when I first showed you," Kate admitted, unable to help the smile that came as she watched Dana look her over.

Looking back up, Dana blushed slightly realizing she'd been caught checking Kate out. "Ah, yes well you shouldn't be nervous. Your talents are..." She paused half a beat. "Incredible." She started to chuckle. "I almost started to make a comment about you having gifted hands, but caught myself. Then was going to try for you are well endowed but that would have been just as bad so.... you are incredible."

"Incredible, gifted, endowed..." Kate grinned. "I could get used to this."

"Really? And just what would you be willing to do to ensure this kind of treatment continued?" Dana teased back as she automatically twisted and leaned in so she could brush a little against Kate.

Tucking back Dana's hair, Kate leaned in, her lips against the redhead's ear. "How about I show you tonight?" She asked.

For a moment, Dana just stood there feeling the shiver start at the tip of her ear where she felt Kate's lip brush softly and travel through her body. All other thoughts and sensory information were shut out as she loudly drew in a sharp breath. Reluctantly she pulled back as she regained control of her body and voice. "Yes, tonight." She sighed dramatically. "I guess it would be considered poor form if I abducted one of the star artists."

"Anticipation, it does wonders for my already incredible performance," Kate said with a clearly cocky grin.

"Oh god I should have known I'd have to deal with swollen head syndrome. Give a sexy, hot artist a little compliment and she blows it all out of proportion. Although since I may be on the receiving end of said performance, maybe I should create a little more anticipation." Dana laughed then unable to keep the tease going.

"Don't worry, I'm already looking forward to it," Kate smiled, leaning in for another short kiss.

A smile the only answer, Dana slowly pulled back finding the contact too brief but still finding public display of affection to be slightly unsettling. Although the displays of affection Kate was alluding too were very nice to think about.

Trying to pull back more from where her thoughts were pleasantly romping, Dana hefted her bag a little. "I am afraid I did not bring anything as perfect or classy as your outfit, but I don't suppose you can point me to either the bathroom or a closet or someplace I can change. I had to come straight from work."

"This way," Kate smiled, tipping her head to the side before leading the way. "So I take it today was a long day?"

Falling in behind Kate, Dana nodded and then realized Kate might not have seen that. "Very long. It seems a number of seemingly unrelated incidents may be related so everything was forwarded to my office. Which is code for an uncomfortable and very tedious case have been dumped in my lap." She sighed and frowned slightly as she shifted her bag to the other hand. "I hope your day was better. Or was it a case of nerves pretty much all day?"

"I tried to get some paper work done. Mostly just doodled and drank too much coffee," Kate admitted, as they reached the bathroom. Turning she smiled at the redhead, "You think you'll need any help changing?" She asked hopefully.

Dana was caught off guard by the question. "Would it help your nerves?" She boldly asked but then waved her hand. "I mean, I'll be ok by my lonesome. Would not want to keep you from mingling."

"And I probably wouldn't make it back out here until the show was over," Kate chuckled. "After you are finished, I can put your bag in the artist's lounge," Kate said taking a few steps back. "Now go, I'll be waiting."
