Chapter 3 – Small Steps Make Large Journeys

Deluge Gallery, Saturday evening

---------

Dana took one last look in the mirror and tried to smooth back an errant strand of hair. Sighing as the strand made its way back out of place, she gave up and opened the door. Heading back towards the main gallery, Dana hesitated on the fringe noting the hectic activity.

Nervously, she adjusted the single strap of her black dress where it snaked around her neck. Swinging the bag with her work clothes a little, she looked around hoping to locate Kate. She noted the back of a person who seemed to match Kate's hairstyle and headed slowly in that direction trying not to get in anyone's way.

Continuing to speak, Kate glanced back toward where she'd left Dana. Spotting the redhead she gave her a smile before reluctantly turning back to the woman in front of her.

Catching Kate's eye and smile, Dana picked up the pace heading in the artist's direction. As she neared, she slowed seeing Kate engaged in conversation with someone else. Not sure if she should intrude, the agent hung back not coming all the way up to the two.

Stepping to include Dana, Kate quickly introduced the gallery's director to Dana. The two greeting each before the director left needing to check on other.

"Well, you're more than friend to me, just not sure where you're at for everyone else," Kate said, explaining the introduction and reaching to take the redhead's bag.

Dana tilted her head some hearing Kate's explanation. She found the description to be both pleasing as well as stirring a small amount of nervousness as Dana was not sure where she was herself.

Things had changed so much in the last month. "Would I disappoint you if I admitted I'm not totally sure where I'm at myself?" She bit her bottom lip as she asked uncertain of the woman's reaction.

"Doubt you could disappoint me if you tried. Well, maybe if you tried really hard..." Kate smiled, resisting the urge to lean in or slip an arm around the redhead. "Just so you know though, I doubt anyone here will be from your line of work, and if they are, well, I doubt they'd be willing to out you," the artist smiled. "All in your own time." she added.

"Considering the field office staff count comes in at the staggering number of one," She paused smirking a little at the statement. "And the impression I received from meeting a few of the local law officials here, I would agree with you." Dana felt her frown slip a little as she made her next remark. "Actually that is something I need to follow through. The office here seems to go through staff faster than a romantic goes through kleenex at a Meg Ryan film festival." She'd not yet delved into why the staff seemed to change so much; that was on her to do list. "But I'm sure right now you do not need to hear about my wonderful workplace."

"I admit I am a bit distracted at the moment, but I would love to hear about it later on," Kate said, shifting Dana's bag to her other hand. "Now, come with me, there's an artists' only room in the back, I can tuck this there."

"Are you sure? I can take it back to my car. If you need to be doing artist things..." She waved in the direction of the exhibits. "And distracted, the nerves still highly stressed then?"

"Not just nerves, I mean, you did look in the mirror, right?" Kate asked, giving Dana a brief leer. "And I should probably stop staring at my own stuff."
