Chapter 1

New Gotham University Hospital, Thursday

----------
Sitting in her chair next to the bed, Helena rested her head on her hand. She'd managed a few hours of sleep herself, but spent most of the night just watching Barbara sleep, hoping to be able to calm her if any nightmares kicked in.

There was a moment when she was dreaming and was completely oblivious to the fact she was dreaming. Then as that moment passed it was followed by the drifting of the dreams to be replaced by random sounds and feelings. This change and move towards awareness released the redhead from slumber enough that her hand moved to scratch at her face even as her mind began working towards a more conscious level.

Giving the redhead time Helena smiled softly. For now she was patient, just sitting and waiting until Barbara was ready to move and get out of here.

As her hand moved over her face, her fingers hit the bruised jaw. The sting of pain drew her fully awake. Her eyes blinking open even as she moved her hand quickly; her face registering the pain as her mind worked to determine where she was and what was going on, the last traces of sleep still clouding her thoughts.

Resisting the urge to reach out for Barbara's hand, Helena waiting until the redhead was awake enough to notice her presence.

Her eyes first focused on the ceiling. She registered that it was not the ceiling she was used to seeing when she woke up. That thought prodded a number of other thoughts to follow. Most were hazy, but enough information came through causing her eyes to move from the ceiling to search for, "Helena." She breathed out her voice soft and low.

"Good morning," Helena smiled softly. "How do you feel?"

Barbara returned, as best as she could, the smile as her eyes drifted to her hands. She noted the IV drip was gone. She splayed the fingers on that hand just to confirm the item was no longer there. "Off the record, a splitting headache is the least of my aches. On the record I am 100% better and why am I still in here?"

"I was waiting until you woke up," Helena admitted, moving to grab a bag sitting off to one side. Reaching through the sound of pills could be as the brunette pulled out a bottle. "I got most of the paper work done, and filled your prescriptions, you'll just have to sign a release or two."

Shaking out a pill Helena also poured some more water before offering both of them to Barbara. "Mind if I sit up the bed?"

Barbara managed her habitual quirk of her eyebrow without too much of a twinge even as she waved at the empty space beside her. "Paperwork? And asking before you lounge? I think maybe I should be asking you how are you feeling?" She took the pill and water from Helena.

Adjusting the bed Helena frowned slightly. "Do you remember what happened?" she asked.

Able to look Helena more readily in the eyes, "What do you mean?" She then added as if it were an afterthought, "And you answered my question with another question."

"Well, if you remember it should answer the question," Helena said, sitting on the edge of Barbara's bed again. "So, what's the last thing you remember?"

The redhead looked at the pill a moment before taking it. After swallowing she looked back to Helena. She had dodged the question and delayed hoping her normally infallible memory would come back. It had not.

She sighed then hating to utter her next words. "The last thing I remember without hesitation and with strong clarity is promising Mrs. Penrose we would be more than willing to help with a few upcoming events." She grimaced then, wincing at the physical pain as well as the fact her memory was cloudy. "After that, things become," she hesitated, "less clear."

"I'll give you the short version. Details I'll explain later," Helena said. "You were kidnapped, by the pair that we've been tracking down. You were drugged, I tracked you, then Dana and I saved the day. Ready to go home now?"

"I..." Barbara blinked a few times at the quick statements. "Well that was succinct." She finally managed after a moment, some of Helena's statements helping to connect some of the random and odd images in her mind.

Yet so many were still fragmented. She realized she had not been speaking and mentally chided herself for letting her attention slip away. "Will you explain the details later?"

"Of course, last night you were just anxious to get home," Helena explained with a shrug. "The doctor said you might have some of the memories come back to you, but it's only a maybe, and with time." Reaching out, Helena gave Barbara's hand a squeeze before slipping off the bed. "Still want to get out of here?

Tilting her head, Barbara mock-glared at the brunette. "No, I want to wait for the jello cart." She managed to keep her glare for a moment more before it began to transform into a smile.

"Good, cause the disinfectant smell is getting to me," Helena said. Upon her earlier arrival she'd set Barbara's back-up wheel chair and some of the redhead's clothes off to one side. Retrieving all those items she handed the clothes to Barbara.

"I'll give you some privacy while I find a nurse with the papers you have to sign," she said, almost reluctant, before pulling the drape and heading down the hall.

Hearing the slight hitch in the brunette's voice, Barbara's face pulled into a thoughtful frown even as she slowly moved to begin getting herself dressed. She started with the upper half, noting a few bruises and scrapes as she pulled on clothes. She pulled back the covers then to clothe her lower half and froze.

The bruises on her lower body were not what held her focus so much as the multiple gauze covered areas; areas that as she slowly peeled back the gauze reveled cuts and in some cases stitches. She continued to stare at the injuries.

She could not remember how these wounds had happened or even an inkling of what had lead to them. This was chased by an odd resentment at the fact she could not feel the wounds; would not have felt them when they had been inflicted. She slowly reached down tracing the wounds, her fingers rubbing over the unfeeling area.

Returning to the room Helena spoke, "A nurse will be back soon with the paperwork. You ready yet?"

Helena's voice jolted her from her reverie. "Oh. I... just have to finish." She looked away from her legs then and focused on pulling her pants on. "So are you able to put up with driving the Hummer back rather than your normal method of travel?"

"Actually, Alfred's getting the Hummer fixed up. You weren't the only one receiving a beating, the Hummer and your chair need a bit of work too. I brought your back-up and Alfred can pick us up, or we take a cab, up to you," Helena explained, pausing on her side of the curtain.

Looking up at the shadowy form, Barbara frowned at the words. She closed her eyes then trying hard to recall something, anything.

"You dressed yet?" Helena asked, getting more concerned the longer the redhead took.

"I'm," opening her eyes, she worked to finish dressing. "Ready." She said as she used her arms to push herself up into a full sitting position, careful, as she moved, of her aches and knotted muscles.

Pushing back the curtain Helena rolled Barbara's chair to the redhead's side. "If we're ready before the nurse makes it down here she said to just go to the nurse's station," Helena said, suddenly realizing just how high the bed was. "Can you get this?" she asked Barbara, not wanting to assume either way.

"I can. Just let me lower the bed. I'll be alright." She said sounding more sure of her self than she felt. The missing memories and actions that apparently had happened to her were beginning to unsettle her normal reserve. The thought that she had been in a state where she had no control kept working against her logical assertion.

"Just not sure how sore you are today. You were... well, pretty freaked out last night," Helena admitted, setting the wheel locks on the wheelchair before stepping back to give Barbara room.

"Freaked out?" Barbara began to pull herself into the chair then changed her mind. Maneuvering into a different position she paused. Again not certain if she could pull her self into the chair as her arms were beginning to feel very rubbery as she used them more and more. "I do not freak out. I am..." she stopped then as she heard frustration creeping into her voice.

Seeing Barbara's position as well as hearing the frustration in her voice, Helena moved to help her the rest of the way into the chair. "It was because of what they drugged you with. I'm just relieved to see you more yourself this morning. Let's just get out of here, alright?"

"Yes, I would like to leave. Thank you Helena, for everything."
