Kate's Place, Sunday, sometime past midnight --------- "I'm sorry, I didn't mean to bring up..." Kate said, turning over her hand to give Dana's hand a gentle squeeze. "I brought it up, and please never be sorry for asking a question. Questions are the only way to find the truth and I... I never want to become what I have worked hard to expose and stop. Some topics are just harder to talk about or are a little hard to fathom. Promise you won't stop asking." She pushed off the back of the couch leaning forward some as she was afraid maybe the brunette would stop. And Dana found herself afraid that the brunette might not want to see her again or would feel awkward around her. "Then why don't you tell me about one of your more entertaining cases?" Kate asked, threading her fingers through Dana's. "Entertaining? Well there was the time we chased magicians who were really con men trying to stage an elaborate electronic bank heist." Dana's mind worked through the many cases even as she absently let her thumb rub over Kate's fingers. "There was the time we ended up in Hollywood trying to track a case and ended up somehow fodder for an imaginative screenwriter. Um, I'm not sure there are very many entertaining cases..." "Alright, you said you might have seen a meta or two before... what about that?" Kate asked, trying to come up with some way to share her own past. "I have found over the years that what they taught me during my basic A and P course does not really begin to cover the true magnificent mystery that is the genetic makeup of humans. That trying to pigeon-hole everyone and thing into a nice category is wrong." She paused, her face becoming more animated as she settled into the topic. "While you or I may be limited in how our bodies work, others seem to have abilities that go beyond what most are capable of. Some people can run faster or jump higher. Others can squeeze their body into incredibly small places and can regenerate with a lifespan much longer than most. Everyone has a gift or talent. But like any other ability, it can be misused. Mulder and I chased down many who took advantage of others not as gifted." "Did you ever run across any who were the one's being taken advantage of?" Kate asked. "Yes, people tend to either ignore, discount or persecute that and those, which they can not understand." Dana tilted her head some not sure what was prompting this line of questions even though she continued to answer the woman. "Those cases are the ones that always reminded me why I kept going back to that basement everyday. The Gibson's and Clyde's, sometimes we were too late." She took a deep breath, "But sometimes we weren't." Kate nodded, still not sure how she felt about the current situation. "This is..." Dana frowned trying to read the other woman. "I'm afraid I don't have anything as beautiful as your work hiding in any of my rooms. I really would prefer the evening ended on something incredible like you and your talent, not my serious past." "Mind another question?" Kate asked. "Please," Dana said smiling to try and encourage Kate. "I really feel... the awkwardness. In fact if it weren't for your incredible sense of self and the presence you carry, I doubt I would still be sitting here talking to you about things I have told no one else really." "Alright, then I'll try to make this the last question, at least for this evening," Kate smiled softly. "Do you... Do you think all metahumans are like those two you fought?" "No, I know they are not. Those two are criminals who happen to have a certain ability. From what I have read, seen and talking with Barbara and Helena, being metahuman is like being blonde - you simply came up with the genetic match to produce that trait. Are you worried about running into others like them?" Dana moved her other hand to rest on Kate's shoulder her face pulling into a frown. "I believe they are the two responsible for the other killings and if you think there might be others coming after you... you really are safe." "No. I guess I was more just wondering what you thought," Kate said, heaving an internal sigh of relief. "Ah, ok. I really think you will be alright. But if you feel uncertain about anything, tell me, please. I'll do whatever you need to make sure you feel safe and alright." Dana said sincerely as she really wanted to make sure the woman felt comfortable. Kate chuckled softly, "Don't worry. I definitely feel safe," she said. "Good." Dana leaned back a little. "And still not running for the door or pushing me out the door calling me crazy, that's a good sign." "No. I'm not," Kate said. Taking a deep breath she paused, "What do you think it would take for me to run you off?" "Run me off?" Dana blinked hard a couple of times caught off guard by the question. She was so sure her murky past would be the mood killer she had never once considered the idea from the other point of view. "Is that a subtle hint that I have overstayed my welcome?" Dana asked tentatively afraid to hear an answer. "No, no, not at all..." Kate said, looking away and trying to find the words she was searching for. "I... Everybody has secrets, you know?" Dana had started to reach out, wanting to pull the cool blue eyes back to hers so she could offer reassurance. Catching herself, she let her hand drop on the back of the couch. "I know." Dana said softly watching every small movement the other woman made. "I'm not the running type." Turning, Kate looked up, wanting to look Dana in the eye, make sure that she saw whatever the redhead's reaction was. "I'm one. A metahuman or whatever you want to call it." "You're a meta?" Dana asked and then stopped feeling foolish having uttered the obvious. Her mind clicked back through the last few minutes of conversation, actions and wording now making sense. This time overcoming her hesitation and reserve, the agent moved her hand to rest on Kate's shoulder not sure if she dared make the contact any more intimate. "Is there something more I should know?" "Not really," Kate said, hoping that Dana's non-reaction was a good one, "It's not even anything aggressive." "Is it something you mind sharing?" Dana gently squeezed the woman's shoulder. "You don't have to tell me. In fact I want to thank you for trusting me enough to bring me into your home, share your incredible creations and for telling me. So, well, thank you." A wide smile grew on Dana's face as she spoke. Kate began to smile back, her smile growing as Dana's did. "It's a visual thing. I can see... I guess you'd say that I can see in different spectrums. Great night vision too." Dana's smile morphed into a look of first amazement then almost giddy curiosity. "You can see... that's amazing." Instinctively Dana leaned forward her eyes locked on the brilliant blue orbs. She leaned even closer as she continued to take in any details she could regarding the woman's eyes. "How does it work?" she whispered her curiosity still high. Kate shrugged, "No idea," blinking to adjust her vision, she spoke again, "Do they look different?" She was still smiling, tilting her face toward Dana's. Working to steady herself, Dana slid her hand a little higher on Kate's shoulder as she became aware of just how close she was to the artist. "They seem maybe a slightly different shade, I'm not sure. I'm a little distracted." Dana replied as she found what had started with a study of the woman's eyes had spread to the agent now cataloguing the minute details of the woman's entire face. "So what can you see now? "This is a night vision thing," Kate said, blinking back to normal. "So if we turn off most of the lights in here you could still see pretty well? That gives you an advantage if ever playing hide and seek in the dark." Dana quipped her eyes coming back to stare into the deep blue eyes. "Something along those lines," Kate matched the intense gaze, "Want to tell me about what's distracting you?" "Hmmm, well, it seems the distraction started with these incredibly intense blue pools of wild, yet strong calm, that lead to a dimpled but firm cheek. This in turn outlined the way to some very distracting lips that curve upwards ever so slightly every time you smile or speak." Dana breathed in harshly then having let her mind's thoughts out for once. "You do know just what a girl likes to hear, don't you?" Kate said, smiling even wider, one of her hands moving to brush over Dana's cheek. "I do?" Dana felt her cheek warm both from the comment and the touch. "I was afraid I was being too forward or silly." "Honesty. That's one of my favorite words," Kate smiled, leaning forward so that she could feel Dana against her. "I'll remember that." She replied faintly as she found it hard to focus on speaking. Finding the contact Kate had initiated to be pleasing and wanting more, Dana released the brunette's hand so she could place her hand on the woman's hip to not only help balance herself but also to bring her even closer to the woman. "What else do you favor?" "Well, I am starting to forget what your lips taste like..." Kate nodded, her arms slipping around Dana. Feeling as if she had done this a million times and hoping she would get to do it a million more, Dana leaned in against Kate. Her hand easily slipping from the woman's hip to the small of her back even as she moved her other hand to play with the ends of the brown hair. "We can't let that happen now can we?" "I'd hope not," Kate agreed, moving in a bit closer, but leaving the rest to Dana. Forgoing any other words, Dana took the brief hesitation as Kate moved nearer to glide her hand up along the woman's cheek before moving so her lips could first just brush the brunette's lips. At the first touch, Dana paused and closed her eyes, her body reacting even to the brief touch. Wanting more, the agent then pressed in, her lips making full contact this time. Smirking at the tease, Kate closed her eyes, letting Dana lead the way. One of her hands tightening on the redhead's hip, Kate let her other slide up Dana's back to rest between her shoulder blades. Her hand had continued to move and was now cupping the woman's neck, her fingers wrapped in the silky hair. She felt the movement of the woman's hands almost belatedly as her body was consumed with the way something as simple as the velvet touch of Kate's lips against hers could send whispers of shivers all the way through her body. Almost on overload, Dana tilted her head slightly as she rolled her lips once more over Kate's, her body leaning heavily against the brunette. Enjoying the feeling of Dana against her, Kate couldn't help but try to pull her even closer. Gasping into the kiss at how their bodies seemed to fit, in Dana's mind almost melding together. The redhead passionately pressed into the kiss, her lips mapping and tasting the curves as she felt the pace of her actions increasing pushed by the growing wants of her body. Afraid she was pushing too much, she let the kiss slide off and across the brunette's lips rather than trying to push deeper. She maintained the closeness however nuzzling against the corner of Kate's mouth before letting her lips nibble across the firm jawbone finally settling on the bare skin even as she rested her forehead against the shoulder, her breathing shallow and fast. "That was... encouraging," Kate smiled, feeling incredibly content. Tilting her head, she tasted the red hair as she inhaled. Dana left her forehead pressed against Kate and nodded feeling the firm muscle and collarbone as she moved. "I normally can think of a number of equally appropriate adjectives but right now I think I am happy to just lean here. It's been a long day. A good long day." "Am I too cocky if I try to take credit for that?" Kate asked. "You'd be foolish not to take credit." Dana replied finally lifting her head although she maintained the closeness. "Although you better not get too cocky, can't let you get too big of an ego boost. Not yet at any rate." Dana smirked some even as she continued to drink in and map out the details of the meta's face. "Yet. I like that word too," Kate smiled. "I thought you might." Dana remarked. She turned her head a little then as she felt another yawn working its way up. "I should take you home. Shouldn't I?" Kate asked, not really wanting to, but knowing she was growing tired as well. Dana looked back at Kate, her arms and hands squeezing the woman once more as she nodded before moving back slowly. "I don't want you to think it is the company or the activities. Both have been wonderful. I, I needed this, badly." Blushing at her admission, Dana looked down even as she shifted back a little more. "You're cute when your face matches you hair," Kate smirked. "Thanks," Dana replied sarcastically before chuckling, Kate's comments once again helping to break the tension. "You have such a way with words." She shook her head before continuing. "Thank you though, I really have enjoyed you and the evening." "Thank you for letting me take you out," Kate replied, her hand moving up over Dana's shoulder and slowly down her arm. Grasping the woman's hand as it slid down towards hers, Dana's smile widened. "I have always kept myself secluded, never daring to be the one bold enough to ask, or make a move or even think about acting on my feelings. You thought enough of me to look past that facade and give me a chance." "You still said yes. Come on, I should take you home before we both fall asleep," Kate said, making no attempt to pull away. "Yes… My best decision since picking New Gotham over the middle of nowhere." contact: docwho2000@hotmail.com page last modified - February 15, 2007 graphics from www.eosdev.com |
