Gary's Room

IS THE EQUIPMENT TOO MUCH FOR THE ROOM...
OR THE ROOM TOO INADEQUATE FOR THE EQUIPMENT?????

Gary has this to
say about his room

As with any home theatre, mine is a constant work in progress. At the present time the set up is as follows:
At the heart of the system is a fully upgraded Krell Audio Video Standard. Not only is it the finest surround sound processor I have ever heard, it is also an outstanding 2 channel pre amp.  The Krell is "fed" from a variety of sources. On the digital front, a Pioneer Elite DVL 90 serves as CD transport, laser disc player, as well as the focus of it's intended use...a (mediocre) DVD player. It's time in the system is quickly drawing to a close, as it will be replaced by a Theta DaViD, fed into a Theta Pro Gen Va for the CD transport, as well as directly connected to the Coax input in the Krell for Dolby Digital and DTS decoding. With regard to the laser, it too will be replaced with a Pioneer Elite CLD 79, equipped to deliver the RF AC-3 signal into the Krell. All of these mods will take place in 1999. Incidentally, the Theta equipment will also be upgraded to handle 24/96, as well as being outfitted with the proprietary LaserLinque optical transmission. On the analog side is the neccessary Mitsubishi U59 VCR...an unavoidable evil in any home theatre arrangement. The most recent acquisition to the system is a Magnum Dynalab Etude tuner...a real beauty! Now if I can only find some consistent decent programming. Once the signals pass through the Krell, they are amplified through the system's only (once again, temporary) embarrassment, an Adcom GFA 7000, 5 channel workhorse of an amp delivering 130W per channel. It's also not long for the system. No Krell pre amp would be complete without the accompanying matching amps...in this case (2) KAV 250a's for the side & rear channels, plus the yet to be released KAV 250/3 for the front 3. The long term plan will be to eliminate one of the 250a's in favor of a pair of Krell 250M mono's that are to be dedicated to the front left & right. Gary 02.JPG (60239 bytes)This brings us to the speaker complement. At present, the aforementioned front left & right are an absolutely gorgeous pair of Wilson Audio WITT's. Unless I hit the lottery, and bump up to the MAXX or better yet, the X-1's, the WITT's aren't going anywhere, except the yet to be realized new theatre. Handling the center chores quite capably is the B & W HTM, that, in spite of the fact that it sounds terrific, is due to be replaced by the Aeriel Acoustic CC3. The rears, also great, but coming up for replacement, are the B & W SCM THX dipoles. Once again, the predecessor will be, not one, but two pairs of Aeriel SR3 surrounds for the side & rear application. The bottom end is delivered by a matching pair of Velodyne F1200R subs. If I don't run out of cash, the long term plan is to replace them with a pair of the yet to be released Aeriel subs that boast an internal 400W amp. Cabling is handled quite nicely by a variety of Kimber Kable, with a focus on their KCAG balanced interconnect line. I also employ the use of Black Diamond Racing cones underneath the HTM, the Adcom, and the Krell. Plus, the Velodyne's are equipped with Simply Physics ToneCones Cone Isolators. The goal is to move the sound from the Krell mono amps to the WITT's via Kimber 8AG when the time is right. Finally, soon to be my wife's TV is a Pioneer Elite Pro 107 that measures 55"  diagonally in a cinema wide, 16 x 10.6 aspect ratio. Plans to replace this deal with a Dwin Projector and a Stewart screen. One more source is also on the horizon...an 18" dish, probably Sony, with Dolby Digital output capabilities. This system currently resides in a dwarflike room that measures 13' W x 15' D. Oh, by the way, there is also furniture in it, including a Sanus Euro stand, on which all the components reside. This leads us to the absolute last tweak on the planning board at this time...a new room. Within 2-3 years, my rental property, a 756 square foot closet of a house, that resides on a lot measuring 80'W x 222'D will be bulldozed down, so that my lovely wife and I may build a house to our own requirements. Mine, of course, includes a basement home theatre that will measure 22'W x 32'D x 10'H. Given the aforementioned upgrades, a room that size should be plenty big to handle what that system will be capable of delivering, with an emphasis of having some "air" around the WITT's, so they can deliver that, which they were born to do. Plans include dedicated 20A circuits for each Krell amp, plus a circuit that an Audio Power line conditioner can plug into for the benefit of the rest of the system. Furniture, too, is being researched at present, but to date, no definite plan has materialized. Of course, I could get hit by a bus today, in which case, all bets are off...
