The Java Model Railroad Interface

    The JMRI project, without a doubt is the best thing that has happened in the Model Railroad world, after DCC.  The entire package is free.   It is maintained regularly by a dedicated group of programmers that just happen to be Model Railroaders or are at least interested in the automation of our layouts.

    You can get all the info at http://jmri.sourceforge.net/ .  This is an open source project, so all the source code is available for those who may be interested in adding to, or improving, the suite of tools.

    There are two significant applications, PanelPro for CTC panels and layout automation and DecoderPro which is the best way to program a decoder since sliced bread.  Within either application a number of tools are provided to manage a layout, from Digitrax Slot monitoring to watching the DCC messages scroll down a screen.
