John “Jock’ Hill. This jam session
was held at the Boulder Friends of
Jazz on December 2006.
The Boulder Friends of Jazz hires a rhythm section, or "back line" of three musicians
to ensure that there will be good quality accompaniment for any musician who
happens to drop in.
A Guest Director is hired on a rotating basis to lead off the jam and to ensure that
any musician in attendance gets adequate time to play in the jam. Prior to the jam,
the Guest Director engages two additional musicians to round out the front line. All
three members of the front line as well as the three musicians in the rhythm section
are paid for their performances at the jam.
Door prizes are awarded to those in attendance based upon ticket drawings. Members
and guests are eligible for such prizes as have been donated by local merchants and
musicians. Examples are dinners in local restaurants and CDs of the musicians in
attendance. The Denver Jazz Club often provides free admission to its concerts as door
prizes. Musicians in attendance are eligible for cash drawings.
