All Saints Day

Feast of All Saints

All Hallows

The feast of All Saints, on its current date, is traced to the foundation by Pope Gregory III of an oratory in St. Peter's for the relics "of the holy apostles and of all saints, martyrs and confessors, of all the just made perfect who are at rest throughout the world," with the day moved to November 1.

President Eisenhower signs HR7786, officially changing Armistice Day
to Veterans Day

October 8, 1954:  I have today signed a proclamation calling upon all of our citizens to observe Thursday, November 11, 1954 as Veterans Day. It is my earnest hope that all veterans, their organizations, and the entire citizenry will join hands to insure proper and widespread observance of this day. I have every confidence that our Nation will respond wholeheartedly in the appropriate observance of Veterans Day, 1954. ~Dwight D. Eisenhower

Friday is named for Frigga, the free-spirited goddess of love and fertility. When Norse and Germanic tribes converted to Christianity, Frigga was banished in shame to a mountaintop and labeled a witch. It was believed that every Friday, the spiteful goddess convened a meeting with eleven other witches, plus the devil - a gathering of thirteen - and plotted ill turns of fate for the coming week. For many centuries in Scandinavia, Friday was known as "Witches' Sabbath."

 26   Eid al-Adha
begins at sunset
Eid ul-Adha is a major Islamic holiday and is celebrated in a similar manner as Eid ul-Fitr; the holiday that marks the completion of the Muslim holy month of fasting called Ramadan. On the morning of Eid ul-Adha, Muslims wear their very best clothes and attend a special prayer, performed in congregation at the mosque. The prayer is followed by a short sermon. Muslims greet one another on this day with the traditional Eid greeting, "Eid Mubarak." After the sermon, like pilgrims performing Hajj, Muslims sacrifice an animal to symbolize Abraham's sacrifice for God. Eid ul-Adha is usually celebrated for four days and is spent giving thanks and praise to God for His many blessings.
