Minutes of Meeting of November 6, 2009
Sharon Masterson, 2009 Chair, called the meeting to order at 10:00 a.m. at her home. Also present were Mercia Bailey, Ellen Baker, Joan Chamier, Karen DeMart, Kathy Friedman, Susan Fullas, Annie Gross, Nancy Hawks, Joan Lucero, Maris Mason, Sue Overley, Melinda Petersen, Sandy Pilcher, Ginny Ricciardelli, Lin Robinson, Sharon Sanfelippo, and Marilyn Wilkerson. Sharon announced that Mercia Bailey and Ginny Ricciardelli are the 2010 committee co-chairs. Emergency Assistance: Sharon announced that of the $----- budgeted for Community Service this year, to date $----- has been spent. Sue Overley presented two requests received from the counselor and nurse at Roosevelt Elementary School. After discussion on both, Susan Fullas moved, motion was seconded and carried that donations be made through the school as follows: 1) A single mother with five children has many financial needs. The children do not have sufficient clothing. Community Service will allot $----- for purchase of clothing. The school will be contacted for information on sizes and specific needs. Ellen Baker, Joan Chamier, Kathy Friedman, and Sue Overley volunteered to do the shopping and follow up with the school. 2) A second-grade boy needs glasses with an expensive prescription. A previous pair cost over $260. Medicaid paid for the glasses but the child has broken them. He is not eligible for another pair through Medicaid until next April. Community Service will provide up to $300 for purchase of the glasses. Annie Gross and Marilyn Wilkerson will research the best source for the glasses [taking into consideration quality (shatter-proof, etc.) and whether the optician offers a breakage replacement guarantee] and will follow up with the school. Part of the money may be used for transportation. Projects Considered: Sharon shared suggestions from Judy Gajkowski for assistance to the Placitas Community Library for the children's program and from Jo Anne Fredrikson a) for establishment of an account for clothing needs and b) for provision of photographic portraits of children to give to incarcerated parents at Christmas. After discussion it was determined that these suggestions might better be handled through the Benevolence Committee, with the photo suggestion handled by purchase of school pictures. 2010 Monthly Collections: Sharon reviewed the collections of 2009, and discussion was held on possible collections for next year. The following projects were agreed upon and coordinators volunteered to arrange and follow through on each month's collection. Karen DeMart volunteered to provide reminder slips to be handed out at the monthly club meetings.
2010 Volunteer Projects: CS will continue the Adopt-a-Highway trash clean-up and the sewing baby quilts for Haven House projects. The Placitas Community Center indicated they did not need lap blankets for seniors this year. Joan Lucero volunteered to research projects to benefit local seniors. Recorder's note: The suggestion was made to look into providing arts and other supplies to the children's area of the Placitas Community Library. During discussion we forgot to get back to this, but there was interest in such a project. Submitted by Lin Robinson
