The Winston-Salem Journal
Winston-Salem, North Carolina

Dear Sirs:

I see by your editorial of September 29, (Rein in Sanjour) that The Winston-Salem Journal does not subscribe to Voltaire's philosophy that "I disagree with what you say but will fight to the death for your right to say it", but rather "I disagree with what you say and will therefore suppress your right to say it".
I would point out to you that in order for my superiors to rein me in as you urge, they would have to suspend the first amendment to the Constitution which guarantees our right to free speech --- the same amendment which protects your right to publish such outlandish statements.

Sincerely yours,
        /s/
William Sanjour
