Examples of SST Images

Here are two examples of  images used in the WKRP Sound Segmentation Program, "Reading By The Rules".
The images and the stories which accompany them help the student connect the shape of letters to their required sounds. These images are provided in sets of  flash cards with the instructor's scripts printed on the back of each card.

WKRP's images are kept very simple and uncluttered which makes it easier for the student to recognize and remember their salient features.

1. The short "O" sound:

Story: When Mom takes you to the doctor, he asks you to open your mouth and say, "Ahh". The visual cue is the open mouth.

2. The "th" sound:

Story: The "t" and "h" are always fighting, so teacher tells them to stay together and get along. But they can't because the "t" keeps sticking its tongue out at the "h". (The "th" sound is made with the tongue between the teeth.)

3. The Spanish short "a" sound:

Story: Que el estudiante piense en una visita al medico. Al estudiante le duele la garganta. El médico quiere examinarle la garganta. El médico dice "Abra la boca y diga /a/ ". El estudiante abre la boca y dice /a/. La clave visual es la boca abierta.
