Thomas PaineThe View From Here...

The View From Here is all about...well...the view from here...the view from the vantage point of classical American idealism.  The view from the vantage point of republican government and personal liberty.  The view from the wave tops of democratic capitalism, which is the strongest force for liberation the world has ever known. The view from the heroic shoulders of the history and legacy of the United States of America.

For the most part, I started out with the intention of creating a website to help organize my thoughts for future reference (sort of an electronic diary) and for my daughter's sake as a form of anecdotal history of the times from her father's perspective.  If others gain enjoyment or anything else from it - bonus.

Just for the record, I have no professional credentials in either creative writing or journalism (aside from some articles I wrote for an international engineering newsletter). I'm a total amateur (a fact many of you will no doubt discover after sampling my fare).

What I also am is passionate about being an American - and not just because of birth, or how I was raised.  My family was not anti-American, but lets just say they were not exactly rabid about it either.  My feelings towards this nation stem from years of immersion in the study of History, Political Science, and U.S. foreign policy combined with the experiences gained from years of military service and journeys as a world traveler.

In any case, the only credentials I can offer are those of a common Patriot.

And when I say Patriot, I refer not to the blind jingoism and rhetoric of the easily swayed or uncritical thinker.  I refer to a Patriotism born from careful study, personal experience, historical research, and philosophical debate.  A Patriotism which recognizes that a Capitalist Republic is the most superior form of Government man has yet to devise and the apex of that achievement is the United States of America.

There it is.  George Will I ain't, people.  I'm just a middle class white guy who happens to be passionately in love with the American ideals of Liberty & Freedom, and understands the need for their active and vigilant defense.
