Judith Wombwell spent much of her professional career in her hometown of Memphis, TN. as a dancer, choreographer and later as Ballet Mistress for BALLET MEMPHIS. During that time Wombwell choreographed several story ballets including Goddess of the Nile, At the Peabody, Legends of Camelot, and the full-length ballets Alice in Wonderland, and Cinderella.
While in Memphis, Wombwell also founded PROJECT: MOTION, a modern dance company with colleague Ann Halligan Donahue. Supported by the Memphis Arts Council, PROJECT: MOTION thrived under the direction of Donahue and Wombwell from 1987 to 1995. During this time Wombwell choreographed original works for the company. She was awarded a MEET THE COMPOSERS grant to work with Don Freund and the ISLAND MOVING COMPANY in Newport, RI to create Passages in 1991. She received an EXCELLENCE IN CHOREOGRAPHY award by MEMPHIS MAGAZINE for Carousel performed by Playhouse on the Square.
"The Wombwell choreography tends to find its lyric flow in horizontal movement close to the floor and its energy in vertical forms. She works particularly well with arms and backs, arranging motion around imaginary poles....master of a forthright line she expressed the strength a dancer can take from air and from the earth." Fredrick Koepple The Commercial Appeal "Choreographers shouldn't brave 30 minute pieces unless they know what they are doing. But Ms Wombwell's Locomotion deserves every minute of it." Whitney Smith The Commercial Appeal
Wombwell began working as an instructor in Theatre and Dance for Phillips Academy in 1995. Since then, she has concentrated on teaching and her choreography for students with the exception of one solo concert titled Southern White Woman. Among her favorite projects are Earthworks, a dance created by improvisation on location in the desert southwest set to Elliott Carter's PIANO SONATA and Parabox a theatre/dance piece directed by Wombwell but created by students through improvisations. Parabox toured to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in the summer of 2001 receiving a three star review...
"the group has created a thought-provoking show with skillful performances. Frenetic scenes, such as those dealing with violence, are among the most successful. The image of reality fusing with fantasy warfare is in turns comic and powerful." Sarah Willcocks The Scotsman for more info contact: Judith Wombwell e-mail:jwombwell@mac.com
