INTRO
Here is the information I promised several of you about my recent birding trip to Mexico. Sorry for the delay. Rather than giving details to each individually, I thought it would be easier to put the information and photographs on a website. (I was sorely mistakenJ) I have included photos of birds, but would love to return to take more. We spent most of our time birding, and there were many striking birds that I saw and didn’t have a chance to photograph. I did record a fair amount of bird songs and calls, but haven’t had a chance to process them yet. I have concentrated on the birds that were new to me, so there are many we saw that I haven’t mentioned. I will add a trip list soon.
For those of you I haven’t talked with yet, these pages are a crude travelogue detailing a recent birding trip to the west coast of Mexico. Having traveled a bit in the Mexican State of Sonora, I ventured farther south in February of 2002 and birded San Blas and the Durango Highway. Finding it hard to get enough of Mexican birding, I began plotting a trip farther south into the States of Colima and Jalisco. The family and friends I had birded with in 2002 were unable to go again, so I kicked around the idea of heading down on my own. My wife, Shelly, nixed that idea in the bud, so I decided to use the opportunity to join a professionally guided tour. I had wanted to join a tour ever since doing a Christmas Bird Count in Mexico with Dave Stejskal (a professional guide for Field Guides®. He had suggested the Colima & Jalisco trip as a good introduction to birds farther south. Checking Field Guides’ website, I saw that Chris Benesh would be leading a trip in January of 2003, and signed up.
