Built in Germany between 1955 and 1969 by Hans Glas GmbH of Dingolfing, Bavaria, the Goggomobil was the most successful of the many "microcars" produced in Europe after WWII. Over 270,000 Goggomobils of various body styles were produced before the company was bought by BMW, of which about 67,000 were Coupes. The diminutive vehicle (4.5 feet wide by 10 feet long, weighing just under 1000 pounds) can allegedly seat 4, though rear seat legroom is minimal. There is no trunk, but there is a luggage rack on the rear deck. The air-cooled engine and integral 4-speed transmission is in the rear. This car has the "big" engine option -- a 394cc, two-stroke, two cylinder powerplant, producing 20 HP (most Goggos had a 250cc engine of 13.6 HP). Top speed is about 62 mph. Note the rear-hinged doors which were a feature until 1964, and the stylish optional windshield visor.
The pictured car has 31,000 km on the odometer, and needs some "freshening." The front seat covers need replacing, and also the headliner and package tray. The engine has been recently rebuilt however -- it looks very clean! After spending most of its life in California, the car arrived in its new home in Massachusetts, into 15 degree (Fahrenheit) weather and 6 inches of new snow. Poor thing must be traumatized!
