2008-2009 Shift Request

  1. Participation in the shift request does not reflect permanent status as a Firefighter or Paramedic, and probation must still be satisfactorily completed.
  2. Although shift request is allowed for bargaining unit members per the Collective Bargaining Agreement, the Chief will allow probationary members to request station/shift after the completion of the shift request. The probationary members request will be effective only after successful completion of probation.
  3. Employees are not required to participate in the shift request. Those employees who elect not to participate will be assigned by management.
  4. There are stations that have positions slotted for probationary employees to be placed in. If you choose to request at, or you are assigned to, one of of those stations you will be expected to conduct and/or participate in the training to meet the needs of those probationary members.
  5. Shift request will be conducted on April 3rd for Lieutenants and will begin at approximately 13:00. Shift request will be conducted on April 4th for Paramedics and Firefighters and will begin at approximately 8:00am and run until completed.
  6. You will be able to follow the process at http://home.comcast.net/~kadle/0809bcfdbid.html or by accessing the link from the www.iaff244.org website.
  7. For the purpose of this request process, we will be contacting you when it is your turn to request. PLEASE DO NOT CALL US UNLESS YOU GET DISCONNECTED DURING THE CALL OR IF WE HAVE LEFT YOU A MESSAGE.

If you do get disconnected, the phone numbers that you can call us back at are:

    Lieutenants --- 342-7951

    Firefighters --- 342-7951
    Paramedics --- 342-7982
  8. OFFICIAL SHIFT REQUEST TIME WILL BE:
    VERIZON WIRELESS TIME

  9. Phone numbers (if different than those on the phone list) where you can be reached the day of your request must be submitted via e-mail to Brian Kadle or Chris Fichtner before 17:00 on April 2, 2008.
  10. The Firefighter and Paramedic seniority list will be called as close to simultaneous as possible with respect to the numerical order.
  11. We will attempt to contact you at allof the numbers we have available for you. When we call you, if we have to leave a message, we will indicate the official time of the call. You will have ten (10) minutes from that time to return our call. During that time, we will continue our efforts of calling you. If your ten (10) minutes expire, and you are not reached, the next person on the list will be called. Once the next person is called your request is forfeited.

If you are not reached, and you have not returned our call before time expires (or you don't have your selections in writing as designated below) you will be assigned by management after the process is over.

There will be a radio in the shift request area and we will have the TELESTAFF report for the day. If you are on a call we will take appropriate measures to make sure you are able to participate in the request.

  12. You may also participate by submitting five (5) shift and station choices, in order of preference, in writing no later than twenty-four hours before the date of the shift request. The request must be time stamped by the receptionist at the Atrium. In the event all five (5) choices are filled, management will determine the shift assignment at the end of the shift requesting process. Submit requests to the receptionist at the Atrium.
  13. The request order will be based on the order of the seniority list as stipulated by the collective bargaining agreement. See attached Seniority List
  14. The approved assignement framework for the shift request is attached. Positions requested must be in accordance with this matrix and you may choose any position that meets your license and job classification.
  15. Family members may not "Request" Station assignments together. They may request the same shift in different regions, or the same region on different shifts. This is in effect for all family relationships: Father/Son, Brothers, Brother/Sisters, Husband/Wife, etc. .
  16. Permanent positions must be filled. If there are any permanent positons vacant at the end of the day because people opted for float positions rather than filling a permanent assignment, the permanent assignment(s) will be filled by management.
  17. All stations are available for Lieutenants to request regardless of licensure, except for the assignments at BCFD Stations 4, 5, and 10 which have been designated as positions for Lieutenants with Paramedic specialty.
  18. Trasfers will be considered after the completion of the shift request per Article 14 of the Collective Bargaining Agreement.
  19. The station Switch will occur on July 5th, 2008; this is the beginning of a new pay period. The switch wil occur at 09:00.

REMINDER: Scheduled Leave Request will be occurring "before the third week of May". This should give you sufficient time to get your permanent station/shift trades submitted to the Chief for approval. Start checking your calendars and have the dates you are going to want to request off ready by the request date. Vacation request is slated for May 15th, 16th, and 17th.
