A Few Notes on Stephen Garlick
c1755-1826
For years I believed that Stephen Garlick was the son of John Hans Garlock (1724-1822) of the Mohawk Valley. I now doubt that Stephen Garlick was the son of John Hans Garlock who was the son of the Palatine immigrant, Johann Christian Garlock. Stephen was believed to have been born 3 April 1724 as issue of his father's second marriage. Amongother things, I cannot find a birth record on John Hans or any record of his marriage and children and the age discrepancy is reason alone to question the link. A birth date between 1750 and 1758 is closer to what is actually known about Stephen. A birth in the 1750s would have made him too young to be the son of John Hans Garlock and a birth in 1826 would have made him 102 years old at his death. There is also the question of the change of name from Garlock to Garlick. Until further proof has been found and to keep open the strong possibility that John Hans Garlock is not the father of Stephen Garlick, I have decided it is best not to link Stephen Garlick to John Hans Garlock.
I also believe that Stephen's birth name was Christopher and not Stephen. The earliest record I can find on Stephen is that of his marriage to Eve Young in the Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, New Germantown (now Oldwick), Hunterdon, New Jersey on November 9, 1778.(1) The record states that Christoph Garlick and Eave Young were married - not Stephen and Eve. At this time there does not appear to have been any other Garlick family in Hunterdon County. There were other Young families. The marriage of Christian to Eve is not evidence enough to support my belief that Stephen and Christopher were one and the same person, but combined with other data listed below, the evidence becomes much stronger. All of Stephen's descendants went by the name of Garlick (occassionally spelled "Garlic").
I have been able to locate two other records in Hunterdon County, NJ on Stephen and Eve. The first is the birth record of second son, David, born 27 September 1780 in Hunterdon Co., NJ to Stephen Garlick and Eve Young.(2) However, this record is from David in later years and not from any official record. David named his parents as Stephen and Eve. The original record, if one can ever be found, probably names his parents as Christoph and Eve. The other record is the birth of Jacob Garlick, fourth son of Stephen and Eve. In this record Jacob Garlick was born to Christoph and Eva Garlick on 6 October 1783 and was baptized on 2 June 1784 at Spruce Run, Hunterdon Co., NJ.(3) In the 1850 census Jacob Garlick, son of Stephen and Eve Garlick listed his age as 65 years(4) making his birth about 1864/1865.
The information makes sense of the Bedford Co., PA census record of Christly Garlick and the 1800 census record of Stephen Garlick. Evidently, over a period of years and for reasons that are not entirely clear, Christoph started using the name of Stephen. How do you get from Christopher to Stephen? An understanding of German nicknames helps sequence the name from Christopher or Christy and Christoph to Stophel and eventually the Americanized Stephen.
Between 1778 and 1808 there are several
recorded records of both Christoph and Stephen Garlick. However, not one
instance can be found where both names are recorded together in the same
record.
Stephen Garlick had between 10 and
13 children, of which 8 are named in his will:
David, Adam, Jacob, Mary the wife of James Layton, Margaret the wife of
Adam Wagnor, Ann the wife of Edward Connor and Catherine the wife of George
Seale [Sill] along with his wife, Eave.
I cannot verify exactly how many children Stephen and Eve actually had or to assign a name to each of them. In 1790 Christly Garlick had 5 males under the age of 16 living with him along with his wife and two other females. Four of the males under 16 were his sons: Frederick, David, Adam and Jacob. One of the females was his daughter Margaret. The other two children may have been Abraham and Elizabeth. All census records for this family in Bedford County are under the name of Stephen Garlick and they are consistent with the information found in the 1790 census.

Christly Garlick aka Stephen Garlick is
not Christian Garlitz as published by J. W. Miller in 1896. For
a discussion on the identity of Christian Garlitz and the Christly Garlick
in the 1790 census of Bedford Co., PA see the article by Charles
