Jacob Hatch, Applications for Military Pensions
General Services Administration, Washington, DC 20408
File 252.246

In his first Pension Application dated  25 Mar 1856, Jacob said he was 72 years.
This would make his birth in 1873 or 1874.
Since it is the earliest known record I have on Jacob - even earlier than the Payson Ward Record,
it is probably the most accurate record of Jacob's birth that has been found.)

Application:  25 Mar 1856, SLC.  Signed and sworn to by Jacob Hatch.

Be it remembered that on the twenty fifth of March A.D. One thousand eight hundred and fifty six before me, Elias Smith, Probate Judge of the Probate Court within and for the County of Great Salt Lake County, Territory of Utah, I being duly authorized by law to administer oaths and take acknowledgments for general purposes personally appeared Jacob Hatch aged seventy-two years, a resident of Great Salt Lake City who was by me sworn in due form of law and on his oath did say that he is the identical Jacob Hatch who was a private in company no. 46, he thinks though as to the no. He is not positive, commanded by Capt. Sylvanus Barney in the Regiment the no. Of which he has forgotten. Commanded by Col. (blurred) Brown, he thinks. In the late war with Great Britain Declared by the United States on the 18th of June 1812 that I volunteered as a private in Ellis Burg [Ellisburg], Jefferson County New York about the month of August 1813 for one month and actually served one month and was honorably discharged at Sacket's Harbor in the State of New York about the month of Sept. 1813. That he was in the Battle fought at Little Sandy about twelve miles from Sacket's Harbor. He further says that he now makes this statement to obtain the bounty land to which he may be entitled under the act of Congress Mar 3rd 1855 that he has never rec'd any Certificate for any Bounty land under this or any other act of Congress nor made any other application therefor. /s/ Jacob Hatch.

We George W. Braffet, aged fifty seven years a resident of Great Salt Lake City and William Burston, age thirty years a resident of Iron County Territory of Utah upon our oaths declare that the foregoing declarations was signed and acknowledged by Jacob Hatch in our presence and that we believe from the appearance and statements of the applicant that he is the identical person he represents himself to be and that we have no interest in this claim. /s/ George W. Braffet, William Burston .

I Elias Smith Probate Judge of the Probate Court within and for the said County certify that the above named George W. Braffet and William Burston are credible witnesses and that they signed and swore to the foregoing statements by them respectively subscribed before me and that in my opinion their statements are true and that I have no interest in this claim. In testimony hereof I have hereunto set my hand and caused the seal of said Court to be affixed this twenty eighth day of March, D.D. 1856. /s/ E. Smith (seal) [note Jacob (or the clerk) says the 25th day and the Judge signed 28th day. I can't make them out to be the same.]

Jacob Hatch of Payson Utah being sworn says he was in service in the war of 1812 for about three months total he thinks the commander was Barney, but he was an Ensign or was Lieutenant. He thinks it was in 1813 or 1814 and he is not sure which was the year, in the fall. Signed in the presence of Hanson Sheffeld and Chester Haskell. /s/ Jacob Hatch (his mark).

Sworn by Jacob Hatch before me this 12th day of February 1875 and I certify that this affidavit was carefully read over to him before he signed it by making his mark - that he is so old and infirm that he can't write his name, but his intellect is good and memory clear. He is the same person who always claimed that he served in war of 1812 from New York State. There has never been any other old person here whose name was Jacob Hatch who claimed to have served in war of 1812 from New York State. He is mentally qualified to make this affidavit and I have no interest in his claim. /s/ Thomas H. Wilson, a Justice of the Peace in and for said County of Utah.

Jacob Hatch being duly sworn says he is now aged 102 years, the 20th of April last and is yet in possession of his mental faculties and can write his name, that he is quite confident one of his officers was named Barney and another Post wherein(?) Post was Ensign and Barney Captain or Barney Ensign. He can't tell. He has given J. T. Stevens of Washington D.C. full power to try and get his Warrant and now he wants the Commissioners of Pensions to send said Warrant to said J. T. Stevens and not to himself as it will be safer and better for me. /s/ Jacob Hatch.

The foregoing affidavit was carefully read over to Jacob Hatch and he fully understood it. He is an old man, but he is mentally qualified and is credible he wrote his name above. He made oath that the said affidavit was true. He is well known about town and has the reputation of being a man formerly from Jefferson County New York State and that he was supposed to have been in the war of 1812. I have no interest herein. Done this 21 day of June 1875.  /s/
