Introduction:

This is the  venerable, affordable  and handy Gauss Master AC emf meter / gauss meter.
This is a great little AC milligauss meter in
it's own right and  a nifty " platform "  for an
array of devices that
are very useful to many types of hobbyist.  It is easily converted to
external antennas, audio outputs and  power on / off switches.

The intended application for the Gauss Master , initially , was to measure  environmental
EMF  AC radiation levels. This radiation was commonly associated with computer screens
and
electrical power wiring in houses and offices. Ghost hunters, paranormal hobbyist,
 UFO hunters
and government conspiracy people have adopted the Gauss Master for
their own  purposes too.
The gauss master " mods " section of this site has useful
Gauss Master  changes to improve  the
meters applications for " all "  the hobbyist
that might use this meter.

The Gauss Master empowers hobbyist with " portable / mobile " ULF and DC
magnetic  wave detection and   allows recording of these waves with the possibility
of  simplification of  the recording process ( usually done with a laptop and spectrum
display program , see the  signal recording   section for more on this ) .  It's vco / meter
circuit  is invaluable as a " hands off "  meter ( one that  you don't have to hold or
look at  to use )  to boot.  Because of the  handy vco  audio  oscillator, this device
can allow a person  to detect and " hear " signals that are  below the range of human
hearing , by " up converting "  them to an audio tone when detected.  A  person couldn't
go down to Radio Shack and buy the   parts to build this nifty  meter , for twice what
 it costs new.
Interestingly ,  the vco  ( audio tone ) circuit both generates a tone for the antenna voltage
signal it receives " and " this  tone is representative  of the signal  as received. In other
words, if   you receive a 60 hz  ac power  signal from wall  wiring or the case of your
computer , this vco   generates a voltage relative of   the strength of  the signal received
( the stronger the signal the  higher pitched the tone )    " and " this tone   has the
characteristic 60 hz " rasp or buzz modulation superimposed on the  audio output  tone
of the vco.  The 60 hz ULF  signal from wall wiring is below  the range of human
hearing , this meter " up converts "  the signal  ( via the vco )  to an audible signal.
" This " is a critical feature of this meter  because   it provides   many important
 advantages .
Of the several inexpensive AC milligauss meters  on the market,  this is the only one with
that feature.  When the vco  tone is fed into a spectrum  display  program such as  Spectrogram
or   the freeware  Spectrum Lab  , the software will show  " both "  the vco oscillator tone
" and " the  modulation superimposed on the tone as well.   If   you are  receiving
a 7 hz  Schumann wave   on the  Gauss Master , the Spectrum display program will
display a  spectrum line at " both " the  2000 hz ( nominal ) generated audio vco
tone , and a spectral line at 7 hz  in the display program .
If you adjust the software to show ( say ) 40 hz  or less , then only the ULF  7 hz signal is
displayed and  seen.   This  7hz ULF signal is quite clearly " heard "( on the speaker )
and " seen "  ( on the front panel  meter )  by the operator  too.  ( see the signal
documentation  and  recording section for more  about  this )

Operation :

This instrument is 9 volt battery powered and has  both a  2 range meter display  and  a handy
" audio "  tone signal to boot. A
press, of the side activation switch, provides  the user  with
two levels   of EMF sensitivity.
When pressed in and held , the meter  has a range of  0 - 1
 AC milligauss and when
pressed in and let go, the meter has a range of 1 to 10 AC milligauss.
  When pressed,
and let go , the Gauss Master  operates  for several minutes and automatically

shuts off. This  feature is intended to be a battery saver .  Normal operation  with this instrument
is detection and  measuring of AC ( man made ) electromagnetic
waves.  It is VERY sensitive
and easily measures  and indicates on DC geomagnetic
waves as well,  if it is manually moved
 through the waves
being  measured. You can wave it around  when holding the activation button
 in
the sensitive ( low )  range and   easily detect the earth's magnetic field.  when carried
in your  car  or  bicycle  etc..  The Gauss Master is capable of detecting  DC magnetic waves if
it is carried through the wave while in motion causing the static magnetic field to " cut " the
antenna / sensor  and generate a tone / reading.

Circuitry :

The Gauss Master has an inductive coil antenna  which  is capacitor coupled into an

signal strength  meter circuit, and a handy audio VCO.  This meter is very handy to use
because the user can make  measurements and not have to look
at the instrument  to
know  when signals are measured, and  how strong
(  relatively ) they are.   The handy
VCO  ( voltage controlled oscillator )
audio circuit  makes a tone when  electromagnetic
 waves are detected.  The
stronger the wave, the higher pitched the  tone becomes.
The pitch of the tone
and the strength level , indicated on the  front panel meter, are
directly
proportional.  The higher the meter reading , the higher pitched
the tone  , the
stronger the wave detected.

The Gauss Master , good as it is , can be improved  upon and can be used for
 many other applications.
It provides a handy method of low
cost " user interface"
for an array of other , related , applications.
The  meter and VCO  circuitry act as a
type of " up converter " as the
AC magnetic waves it  usually  measures are below the
range of human hearing.

When it  detects ac waves with it's antenna coil , it changes
these waves into a

audible tone and a level  meter reading. Capable of detection of DC
magnetic  waves if kept in motion in their presence , this meter provides  the best of
both ac and dc magnetic wave / signal  detection   worlds   at a very low cost.
