SOMEBODY WONDERFUL by Kate Rothwell is simply wonderful and totally captivating. Ms. Rothwell’s charismatic characters, gritty 1882 New York setting and witty writing style fascinated me from the first page of this delightful novel.
Michael McCann, a rugged, right off the boat, Irish cop had no idea his life was about to be turned topsy turvy the night he rescued Timona Calverson from a “fate worse than death”. Mick thought he had rescued another poor hapless boy from a gang of ruffians but then “he” turned out to be a “she” running away from a house of ill repute. Ultimately even that was a mistake because “she” was really the rich daughter of a famous eccentric archeologist that had been kidnapped and brought to a bordello as a working girl.
Timona is not the typical turn of the century maiden. Her travels around the world with her unconventional father, has given her a worldly education and insight into people’s character. Timmy perceives that Mick is a kind compassionate man with a good heart and she immediately falls in love with him. Now all she has to do is to make sure he feels the same way about her.
Kate Rothwell’s SOMEBODY WONDERFUL, is a rollicking, rowdy, romantic read with a touch of suspense. I was truly impressed by the background research that went into SOMEBODY WONDERFUL and learned a thing or two, one of my criteria for a great historical novel. This book will not get dusty on your “keeper shelf” because it is one that you will read again and again.

Kate Rothwell has written a fabulous story that will have you falling in love with Mick almost as
quickly as Timona does. Set in the streets of 1880’s New York, amongst the sometimes bleak background
of poverty, graft, and tenement housing, Ms. Rothwell draws the reader into this world and never lets go.
Her descriptions made me feel like I was right there in the tiny one room flat, and her characters charmed
me instantly. I could hear Timona’s laughter and Mick’s brogue, and feel the kindness these two wonderful
people spread around them. This debut novel will enchant you and have you eagerly awaiting the next offering
from Ms. Rothwell. I know I am.

Awesome Debut!
Just finished Somebody Wonderful this weekend and have one word for it...AWESOME! Kate Rothwell's characters are captivating. Not since Nora Roberts have I read about such intersting people. Somebody Wonderful has an old world flavor laced with subtle humor. I did not want to put it down. This is one of the best first books I've ever read! I believe Ms. Rothwell is going to have a BRILLIANT career! I'm eagerly awaiting Araminta and Griffin's story.
Looking forward to more!
Somebody Wonderful is a breath of fresh air in a romance market filled with predictable plots and high-brow aristocrat heroes and heroines. Timona and Mick feel like real people, flawed, loveable and interesting, people you enjoy getting to know as they fall in love with each other and to whom you are sad to say goodbye when you close the cover. The dialogue is engaging, charming and witty. Ms. Rothwell's keen sense of humor shines through. The unusual time period and adventurous atmosphere adds to the story's appeal. I'm looking forward to more from this delightful new author!
Great first book!
This was a book I stayed up through the night to read. Ms. Rothwell's characters pulled me right into the story and kept me guessing.
I love the wide cast of characters- loved both the old New York setting and the more rustic Minnesota setting. Ms. Rothwell painted so well that I could see and feel everything around the characters as though I were there myself.
I can only hope Ms Rothwell intends to give Timona's brooding brother his own story. Even after I was sighing over the happy ending between Timona and Mick, I found myself wondering what Griffin's own adventure would be...
A to-die-for hero!
I simply adored this debut novel by Kate Rothwell--but I especially adored the hero, Mick. He was a very real, very sexy, very endearing character. Timona was a fascinating heroine, as well. She was an unusual mix of sophistication and sweetness, and different from most romance heroines. It was a terrific, fast-paced, sexy read, and I can't wait for Ms. Rothwell's next book!
