Painting Monhegan Island, Maine
With Kathy Cooper
3 Day Workshop
Unscheduled - join the workshop email list for updates

Join Kathy Cooper as she takes “painting from life” from her studio onto Monhegan Island, Maine. Discover the stunning natural beauty that has been the strong attraction for artists since 1858. The island is 11 miles off the coast of Maine, shaped like a whale, 17 miles of hiking trails, and is 1/2 mile wide by 1.7 mile long. On the island you’ll find picturesque painting locations in the historic village, cliffsides, coves, and a famous lighthouse. Artists are revered on this island as the beauty around them.

See the island thru an impressionist painter’s eyes. Kathy Cooper, President of the American Impressionist Society, Inc., will demonstrate and discuss her painting in the morning sessions (while you watch or paint) and will instruct the students in the after noon painting sessions which will end at 4 p.m. Painting locations will include a cliff overlooking the ocean, a path in the village, a harbor, a lighthouse, and more.

This workshop is for artists with intermediate to advanced painting experience who would like to try plein air painting, or are interested in plein air impressionism. Lessons will include capturing the changing light, the structure / composition of the painting and technique. A supply list is provided upon registration.

“Kathy Cooper is an excellent oil painting instructor. She teaches by encouragement verbalizing your strengths and possibilities. I have learned more in one class with her than years with other instructors.”

Prepare for half mile hikes with painting supplies (no cars or bikes). We will travel to the island by ferry prior or on the 11th, and return on or after Sunday the 15th.
Full workshop days are August 12, 13, and 14th 2010.

Monhegan Island Facts:

The island is located 12 miles off the mid-Maine coast.

The island is one mile wide and two miles long.

The island was settled by Englishman John Smith in 1614.

Monhegan residents provided fish to help the Pilgrims through their first long winter in Plymouth.

Through the 19th century, Monhegan residents remained focused primarily on fishing and farming for their livelihoods.

The first artist to arrive on the island was Aaron Draper Shattuck.  He did so in 1858.

Artists began coming to the island in significant numbers in the late 1880s when boarding houses opened on Monhegan.

The period between 1903 and 1918 is frequently referred to as the golden age of painting on the island.

Artists representing every major school of American art have painted on the island.

Three generations of the well-known Wyeth family have painted on the island.

The year-round island population is under 100.
