Welcome to Waldenburg Michigan
Beautiful Downtown Waldenburg, a Party store, a Hardware store and and the world famous (our world anyway) Waldenburg Bar. The "Old Timers" say that Waldenburg is named after the
town in Germany. The story told is that when the town was going to be named the
person that brought the beer to the meeting got to name it after his hometown Waldenburg Germany. It is located about 22 miles north of
Detroit at the intersection of 22 Mile Road and Romeo Plank in Macomb Township, Michigan.
It has moved a few times over the last 140 years, but has been at this location from the
turn of the century. Waldenburg has always been located on the plank road that
connected the town of Romeo, to the north, to the town of Mt.Clemens, to the south, and
from there you could get to Detroit. The Farmers would travel this route to get
their goods to the markets in Detroit. This trip would take a day or more and
Waldenburg was a good place to stop and rest. The maps of 1859 show Waldenburg two
miles to the south of it's present location. In 1882 Waldenburg was one mile to the south
where Immanuel Lutheran
Church is still located. There is no official population count, but let's say
that it's in the double digits. One day they repaved Romeo Plank the length of
Waldenburg, from Stier's to Stier's, and they were done by lunch. We even had a
Motor Cycle Gang in the mid 60's, the Waldenburg Raiders. They were a good bunch of
guys, mostly farmers riding mostly British bikes.
Yes, but all of that is changing, Waldenburg is falling victim to urban sprawl. The farm lands are now growing subdivisions and houses like weeds. Each new sub has more people in it then the whole area did 15 years ago, progress. I know that my days are numbered in my present house, but I will stay in Waldenburg, moving into a sub most likely. I have to stay in Waldenburg, I am a Ham Radio Operator and my Radio Shack is nick named "Radio Free Waldenburg". All of the new subs have ANTENNA restrictions, as in NO antennas, they want you to hook to cable. I operate on the Short-wave bands and have long wire antennas, so I will have to go clandestine and live up to my Alien Pirate Flag logo.
