| First things first, never, never leave
a burning candle unattended. Always make sure to have it in an appropriate
tray, saucer, votive holder, etc. Be aware that even if candles are
in holders, they may still conduct heat on sensitive surfaces. What
did Benjamin Franklin say? “An ounce of prevention is worth
a pound of cure” --that goes double for candles. If there are
children or pets around, especially toddlers and cats, take extra
precaution. Candles do best if you keep the wick trimmed to ¼
inch. This also helps the candles burn more evenly if the first two
initial burns on the smaller pillars are at least couple of hours
in length, then burn down as desired. This helps set the “edge”
and create “memory” so the candles are less likely to
spill over. Be aware that drafts my cause the candles to burn unevenly,
but that can be easily remedied by using a glass hurricane. It looks
nice and adds an additional layer of reflection and protection. Putting
a teaspoon of water in the votive holders before lighting will aid
in removing any remaining wax once the votive has burnt out.
A favorite thing for my family to do together is to have a “black
out” in our living room and light candles and read books and
tell stories. My boys are 4 and 7 so this may not work with teens,
but try anyway, it might be fun just to confuse them! Mostly enjoy,
and just think how many civilizations and geniuses worked by candlelight--so
be a genius in a lost civilization and light a Kaleidoscope candle!
