Massachusetts State Police Statewide Trunking System

NOTICE

Troop C Channels have been changed (6/11/07).

System Information

The Massachusetts State Police are in the final stages of upgrading to a statewide Motorola SmartZone trunking system. When the system is complete, it will cover the entire state of Massachusetts. The system is currently divided into 23 different zones (with more zones expected once Troop B comes fully on-line):

Map of State

The system ID for the statewide SmartZone system is 0x0d14. Some talkgroups may access the system in any of the zones across the entire state. At least one user of a talkgroup must be "affiliated" in a zone for that talkgroup to be heard on a particular zone. Other talkgroups must be patched over the system by headquarters for any user to be able to talk between two or more zones. Most zones have multiple sites within the zone which are implemented using Motorola's simulcast system. A voting system is used to determine which site receives the user. The transmitters at all simulcast sites are synchronized (using GPS signals) to reduce heterodyne noise. A list of all talkgroups that show up on any or all of the zones is included at the bottom of this page.

In addition to the trunked talkgroups, most users have access to one or more simplex channels and/or conventional repeaters. The simplex channels are usually programmed in channel 16 (or TAC-16). A list of simplex and conventional frequencies is included above.

New! UASD Files for BCD996T!

All files necessary to monitor the statewide trunking system and conventional channels using the Uniden BCD996T scanner are included in this single ZIP file. Talkgroup IDs are the same as shown in the Talkgroups table below. GPS coordinates are included for those who use this feature.

Trunker Files

All files necessary to monitor the statewide trunking system using TRUNKER version 3.8 are included in this single ZIP file. Talkgroup IDs are the same as shown in the Talkgroups table below. User IDs are also included, where known. All new MEMA and FM radio IDs are included. Note: I have temporarily taken my msp_trnk.zip file offline due to file space restrictions.

TrakkStar Files

All files necessary to monitor the statewide trunking system are included in this single SWG file. Talkgroup IDs are the same as shown in the Talkgroups table below. Note: This file is kind of old and must be updated!

Statewide Fleet Map

This system is now a Type II system state-wide. The following TrunkTracker fleet map should be used for any of the zones in this system.

Talkgroups

The table below lists all of the talkgroups found in any of the zones on the statewide system. The columns on the right side of the table show the zones where the talkgroups have been heard. Note: All of the old Type I talkgroups have been moved to the bottom of the list, as they will be taken off in the near future.

Some TrunkTracking scanners will decode the status bits for a talkgroup and show different numbers than reported on this page, as follows.

If the talkgroup is 1 higher than the desired talkgroup (ex: 33553 instead of 33552), it is because a dispatcher has selected the all talkgroup (ATG) mode. All radios are programmed with an ATG talkgroup, for example all radios used by MSP Troop A have 33552 as their ATG group, while radios used by MSP Troop D have 34160 as their ATG group. When an ATG is selected, all radios who have that talkgroup as their ATG automatically tune to that talkgroup while the dispatcher is transmitting. This is used for broadcasts from dispatch for all the units. Typically it is used to locate K9 or Truck Team units when it's not known what talkgroup they are currently monitoring.

If the reported talkgroup is 2 higher than the desired talkgroup (ex: 34002 instead of 34000), it is because a user has pushed the emergency button on the radio. If this button is pressed, a voice channel is allocated exclusively for the talkgroup that the radio is currently tuned to with an offset of 2. For example, if a trooper in D troop is listening to talkgroup 34000 and presses his emergency button, talkgroup 34002 will become constantly active on the system (even if nobody is transmitting). All MSP troop A, H, E, and F emergency talkgroups are handled by dispatchers at SP Framingham (with the exception of full-time troop F units on the Massport trunk, which are handled by Massport Communications). All MSP troop B and C emergency talkgroups are handled by dispatchers at SP Holden. All MSP troop D emergency talkgroups are handled by dispatchers at SP Middleboro.

If the reported talkgroup is 3 higher than the desired talkgroup (ex: 34003 instead of 34000), it is because a dispatcher has patched two or more talkgroups together. Users on any of the patched talkgroups may talk to each other during the duration of the patch. This feature is most commonly used to patch talkgroups that are limited to a specific geographic regoin together so that they may show up on more than one SmartZone.

If the reported talkgroup is 8 or more higher than the desired talkgroup (ex: 34352 instead of 35344), you probably are also hearing noise, as this is an indication that you are listening to a digital talkgroup. Uniden will be introducing scanners this fall that MAY be capable of listening to these talkgroups (if they're not encrypted).

Any recent changes to this list are shown in bold.
