1968 Mustang - Progress 15
May 10, 2008
Here are a few more pics.
I painted the deck hinges and trunk gutter area black after I
repaired the rust in taillight area. Used a light green self etching
primer as I ran out of gray and they were out at the local store, but I
followed it with some sandable gray primer. I bought new hood hinges and
springs from Mustangs Unlimited, but am having trouble with the LH hinge.
It is way too stiff and has less travel than the RH. I think they are
from different manufacturers, and have sent an email off to MU to ask how they
want to handle. I installed the hinges and bought a new hood from
Mustang Plus aka Mustang Resto-Parts. I also stripped the paint off the
windshield washer fluid dispenser tubes. I'll reattach them for
painting. I cleaned up the grill and painted it also. You may also
notice that I sprayed the board in the trunk with undercoating. I didn't
like the silver color I used before. I think I might cut a single larger
board to cover more of trunk area. There is about 8 inches in the back
that isn't covered and I like the undercoating look. I may also make
some boards for both quarter trunk areas to make that space usable. I'm
pretty certain I'm going to take it to Maaco. I've heard the good and
the bad, but the local company has a decent reputation for the cost and the
MCC did a so-so job of just sanding or media blasting the parts and priming.
I had to prime several places on many pieces I took to them. So I'll
give Maaco a shot. I've only got the cowl and door handle areas
left and I'm pretty sure I will just leave that to Maaco. If I can't get
the hood and trunk right, I'll have them do that also... I'm ready to get it
on the road and the little it would cost me is well worth it rather than just
keep putting it off. Besides, my son is about to go off to college at
UNC and wants to drive it a little before he goes and my girls are both
reaching 16 and it would be easier to learn to drive this car than my van or
truck.
