1968 Mustang - Progress 17
July 14, 2008
July 14, 2008 - No more done on the A/C as yet. I think
I damaged the low side valve plates or they just wore out as now I get 0
pressure on the low side. I was only getting 11 MPG and my vacuum
wasn't steady so I tried this trick of spraying some carb cleaner along the
area where the intake mates to the head beside the valve covers and it
instantly jumped my vacuum up. This is supposed to be a sure sign I
have a bad intake manifold. I pulled the carb and intake and cleaned
them off for new gaskets. I installed the new intake gaskets and
instead of the cork end pieces I used "the right stuff" which is a gasket
maker type similar to silicone RTV. This increased my vacuum to 18-20"
but I still don't get a steady vacuum, so it appears I still have a leak.
The only think I haven't checked is the brake line so that happens next time
I start her. Interesting info... the 4 end intake manifold ports, I
believe they're used for coolant, did not align with the head ports.
The gasket itself matched to the overall dimensions and bolt holes lined up,
but it wasn't a perfect match that I was expecting. I asked around and
basically was told Ford kept making changes and whatever was in stock was
put on the car regardless if it was a '68 or '76, the idea was to use what
you've got. The intake number is C8AE-9425-B. If you know
how to identify this intake, please email me.
